Eating as an Act of Worship

He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.” John 6:54

Shabbat Shalom, dearly beloved!

One of the most controversial subjects in the Church is food, because so many lies are propagated by Western Christianity through Replacement Theology. Jews that were forcibly converted to Christianity needed to prove that they were true Christians by eating lots of pork and desecrating the Shabbat. But not only to those converted by force. This happened to me, and to many other Messianic Jews. Born again, Spirit-filled Christians tested me on my faith if I was a true “Born Again” and “free from the Law” depending on whether I ate pork, shellfish, and desecrated the Shabbat. One of the first greetings I had from some Christians after my salvation was: “Welcome! Now that you are saved, you are free from the law; you can eat all the pork you want! Isn’t that wonderful?” No! It was not wonderful. I did not want to eat any pork either. The message was clear: If you are saved, you must show it by eating pork, so we (Christians) are sure that you are not Jewish anymore, but a “real” Christian. Oi Vey! Yah, help us for so much ignorance!

Be courageous and read through to the end you will understand what Yeshua meant when He said: “Eat My Body and drink My Blood.”

Eating as an act of worship is pagan cultures

Pagans seem to understand spiritual principles better than most Christians. Every religion has special laws about eating. Food must be consecrated and dedicated to their god or the ancestral spirits. When I was in Bali, Indonesia, I saw many people in the streets carrying food on trays. I wondered why so much food was traveling in trays on the streets. Our host explained that it was the portion of their food that they would put on the altar of their idols. These people were so conscientious about it that they were busy the whole day with this.

In Islam, they have the Halal laws, which means that all meats must be dedicated to Ala by their local priest it is not certified fit for consumption for Moslems until then. Those are the Halal shops and restaurants that you see in many countries. Halal means that their meats are dedicated to Ala, and Ala is not YHVH.

These are only two of myriads of examples in every culture. Eating is an act of worship to their gods and idols. Many mistaken missionaries have complied with unholy eating to win the people over, but that does not win them over; it demonstrates to them that you are willing to worship their god rather than yours. I once read in a popular Christian Magazine about a great church leader in the Far East that complied with drinking horse blood with the Chief of a tribe. He did this to win the tribe’s Chief over by honoring him and drinking their most “honorable drink.” The said minister fell violently sick and almost died. What he did not understand was that for all religions and tribes, eating their food and meals also means making a covenant with their gods.

I have proven many times that when Rabbi Baruch and I eat only clean animals and when we eat what the Torah prescribes, indigenous people honor us and are open to being taught by us. We honor our God, and we honor His laws! We have been in Apostolic Missions for 32 years and have never consciously violated Yah’s Dietary Commandments to please anybody. It has never stopped us from preaching the Gospel, on the contrary.

Daniel the Prophet decided not to defile himself with the unclean food on the table of the King even at the expense of losing his life! (Daniel 1) His allegiance to YHVH and His Commandments caused him to rise to the highest governmental position in Babylon. Yeshua describes it as follows:

Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:19

Daniel became great by keeping the Dietary Commandments and by worshipping YHVH in holiness amid Babylon. I will endeavor to prove to you that eating is an Act of Worship and there is a huge difference between Covenant Eating and “worldly eating.”

Eating Covenant

Covenant eating

First, the Torah admonishes us to consecrate every meat we eat to YHVH, which is meat derived from Clean Animals as described in Leviticus 11 (Please read the list).

Speak unto Aaron, and unto his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them; This is the thing which the Lord hath commanded, saying, What man soever there be of the house of Israel, that killeth an ox, or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or that killeth it out of the camp, And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering unto the Lord before the tabernacle of the Lord; blood shall be imputed unto that man; he hath shed blood, and that man shall be cut off from among his people. Leviticus 17:2-4 KJV

We could say this is the Old Covenant and we do not need to apply the principle of dedicating our food to YHVH, but we will see the same principle in the following Scripture:

For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. 1 Timothy 4:4, 5

We can see that Paul admonished Timothy about the way of eating as an Act of Worship. It includes thanksgiving, the Word, and Prayer. The only Word available then was the Tanach or the Hebrew Holy Scriptures (wrongly termed Old Testament). So, Paul told Timothy that eating in a manner that will please Yah would be by:

  1. An attitude of thanksgiving (that’s worship!)
  2. Sanctification (holy food) by the Word of God (the Torah)
  3. Prayer (Act of Worship!)

In other words, what the Torah does not sanctify is not holy for the believer to eat. Remember that the only Book to make doctrine in the first 300 years was only the Torah. (NO New Testament until 325 AD.) Prayer nor thanksgiving alone does not sanctify it unless the Word (Torah) sanctifies it. Of course, pork and shellfish, rabbit, horse, snake, mice, and the like are not sanctified. In fact, during the outpouring of Yah’s wrath on the earth, He is going to judge idolaters and those who eat unclean animals. (Read Leviticus 11)

For YHVH will execute judgment by fire and by His sword on all flesh, and those slain by YHVH will be many. “Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go to the gardens, following one in the center, who eat swine’s flesh, detestable things, and mice, will come to an end altogether,” declares YHVH. Isaiah 66: 16-17

Idolatry and unclean animals go together. That is why when the Greeks took over the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, they desecrated it by putting an image of Jupiter and by sacrificing pigs on the Altar. Reading 1 Timothy 4:4 without understanding, with a wrong theology which has been preached, namely that “we can eat whatever we want as long as we pray for it,” Completely ignoring the Word of God prior to the word prayer in that Scripture.

Eating Covenant

Wrong Interpretation of Peter’s Vision

On the next day, as they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray. But he became hungry and was desiring to eat; but while they were making preparations, he fell into a trance; and he *saw the sky opened up, and an object like a great sheet coming down, lowered by four corners to the ground, and there were in it all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air. A voice came to him, “Get up, Peter, kill and eat!” But Peter said, “By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean.” Again, a voice came to him a second time, “What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy.” This happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up into the sky. Acts 10:10-16

The Vision of Peter from Acts 10 continuously has been interpreted wrongly as if this vision is about permission to eat unclean animals! In some Bible Translations, they even added parenthesis (thus making all foods clean) that do not exist in the original Masoretic text. It is very clear from the text that this vision was an allegorical vision to let Peter know about the Salvation of the Gentiles. Yeshua showed Peter not to call any man “unholy or unclean” because He was going to save the Gentiles. As we read further in that same chapter Cornelius and his friends and families get saved as the first fruits from among the Gentiles.

When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and worshiped him. But Peter raised him up, saying, “Stand up; I too am just a man.” As he talked with him, he entered and found many people assembled. And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit him, and yet God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean. That is why I came without even raising any objection when I was sent for. Acts 10:24-29

Breaking a Dietary Commandment Brings on the Curse

YHVH has shown me clearly that people that love unclean animals for the most part also carry an unclean spirit, and yes, our eating does affect our spiritual, emotional, and physical life. All of humanity fell because of breaking one Commandment and it was a Dietary Commandment.

The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” Genesis 2:16-17

The punishment for breaking a food Commandment also affected the food as now Adam would have to work hard to obtain it, and on top, humans now would eat like animals “plants and herbs” instead of the awesome fruits of the Garden of Eden.

Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it; cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; and you will eat the plants of the field; by the sweat of your face You will eat bread, till you return to the ground, because from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Genesis 3:17-19

Notice that the word EAT is mentioned five times in the verses of the curses.

Poverty came in by breaking a Food Commandment, and it still does.

I participated years ago in a Bishop’s Forum in Shenandoah, Iowa, USA. I was appalled at the state of the city. It was the most backward and neglected city I had ever seen in the USA. The lady that picked us up from the airport told me that this used to be the Seed Capital of the USA and a very rich, clean, and beautiful city. I asked her, “What happened then to change it?” She said that they introduced pig farming instead of the seeds, and it has gone down since, running rampant with drugs, crime, and poverty. Do you think this is a coincidence? Absolutely not! Pig farming brought the curse. I have read medical statistics that say that about 70% of early deaths in the USA are due to pork (and all its derivatives) consumption. Americans put pork in nearly everything; beans, turnips, green beans, and the like.

Eating Covenant

A Holy Banquet at the End of the Book

Just like the fall of man was due to breaking a Dietary Commandment, the end of the book tells us that we are invited to a banquet called the Marriage Supper of the Lamb! So, the subject of eating is in the first and the last book of the Bible and all through it! Believe me that we are marrying a Jewish Bridegroom and there will be no unclean animals on that Table.

Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.” It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.'” And he said to me, “These are true words of God. Revelation 19:7-9

Isn’t it revealing that the Fine Linen on the Bride of Messiah is “the righteous acts of the saints?” In other words, living under grace means obedience to Yah’s Commandments as enabled by the Holy Spirit to do so! “Righteous Acts” means “doing what is right before YHVH.

Whoever believes that Yeshua is the Messiah is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. For this is the love of God that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:1-3

Yeshua Wants to Dine with Us

Yeshua is knocking on the door of a lukewarm church to dine with her. So, if you open the door what will you serve Him, the Jewish Messiah? Pig? Shrimp? Will he eat “whatever is set before Him with thanksgiving in His heart,” or will He keep His Father’s Commandments?

Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.'” Revelation 3:20-22

He is calling us to Teshuva (Repentance-Returning-Restoration) from all Replacement Theology and especially unholy eating that in the Torah is mentioned in conjunction with immorality! (See all Leviticus 17 and 18) also in the book of Acts, they are mentioned together.

Therefore, it is my judgment that we do not trouble those who are turning to God from among the Gentiles, but that we write to them that they abstain from things contaminated by idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood. For Moses from ancient generations has in every city those who preach him, since he is read in the synagogues every Sabbath.” Acts 15:19-21

Of the 4 Categories of Commandments given so that the Gentiles could even fellowship with the Jewish believers, 3 of them are dietary and 1 of them is about immorality (fornication).

  1. Food dedicated to idols
  2. Fornication
  3. Strangled animals
  4. Blood (See Leviticus 17:10, 11)

Please notice that these were not the only laws given to the Gentiles; these are “starters” because Moses of old was preached in every synagogue on Shabbat and they were expecting the new Gentile believers to go to synagogue and study Torah. That’s the reason that they did not include Commandments like “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not steal,” and “and you shall not covet.” Not because Gentiles can lie, steal, covet and get away with it but because they were expecting Gentile believers to grow in the Knowledge of YHVH and Torah. But please notice how important the whole subject of eating is that of the 4 “starter laws” given to them, 3 of them are about Holy or Covenant Eating.

Throughout all the Moadim, Appointed Feasts, and Convocations the major Act of Worship was actually eating before YHVH in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem)

But you shall eat them before the Lord your God in the place which YHVH your Elohim will choose, you and your son and daughter, and your male and female servants, and the Levite who is within your gates; and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God in all your undertakings. Deuteronomy 12:18 STB

Covenant Eating

The Truth About Communion

The institution of the New Covenant happens during a Passover meal where Yeshua is dining with His disciples, and He gives them Matsa (unleavened bread) to eat and wine to drink. Those two are the elements of Passover representing the Lamb sacrifice and Yeshua is our Passover Lamb.

And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. Luke 22:15

Before this Feast Dinner, Yeshua had told the people that the only way to be saved and be one with Him is by eating His Body and drinking His Blood.

He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me. John 6: 54-57

When He said that, everyone left Him besides the 12. They did not understand what He meant. He said My flesh is food. He is the Word (Torah!) made flesh.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

So, what He was telling them was:

If you want to be one with Me, eat My Torah, My Word (Five Books of Moses and all), and drink my Spirit (Wine is likened unto Blood and Spirit!).

So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. Ephesians 5:17, 18

Eat My Torah, My Word, and drink My Spirit and you will be one with Me!

(Not external books like Talmud, the Book of Enoch, and Kabbalah but rather Yah’s Word alone together with the baptism, infilling of the Holy Spirit).

This is exactly what He told Joshua,

This book of the law (Torah) shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. Joshua 1:8

In other words: Joshua eat my Word, My Torah. The word “meditate” is the same word used for a cow when she eats grass via 4 stomachs until it is fully digested. The Torah, the Word of Yah should not depart from our mouths. We should read it, think it, declare it, and eat it until it becomes flesh in us! When it does, we then become Living Epistles read by men because our actions and attitudes have become one with the Torah, one with Yeshua.

When we take the unleavened bread and the wine or grape juice as the Body and the Blood of Yeshua, we declare our allegiance and Covenant relationship with His Word-Torah and Spirit. It is a commitment to walk in righteousness and holiness, obeying His Commandments and filled with the Spirit not under the Law but in the Law; He is the Torah made flesh. Anything less than that is deception. There is no way that we can be in Covenant with Him if we reject His Word and Commandments including the Dietary Commandments that are extremely important.

Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly. For this reason, many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world. 1 Corinthians 11:27-32

Judging the Body rightly is understanding that His Body is the Word made flesh and thus we are called to eat His Word, Yah’s Torah, and become one with her through the Holy Spirit.”

Take communion daily, eat His Body and drink His Blood, eat the Matsa and drink the fruit of the vine, eat His Torah and drink and get filled with His Ruach-Spirit.

It is time to choose Covenant Eating.
