Torah Portion KORACH – Bamidbar (Numbers) 16:1-18:32
There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” Numbers 13:33 NASB
Shabbat shalom dearly beloved!
In the above verse we see that 10 out of the 12 men that Moses sent to survey the Land of Promise came with their own interpretation of reality. They saw the Giants, the Nephilim (that was a fact) but they IMAGINED themselves as grasshoppers. Where they in reality grasshoppers? No, but that was the ‘Figment of their Imagination’.
Definition of Imagination
by Merriam Webster dictionary
1: the act or power of forming a mental image of something not present to the senses or never before wholly perceived in reality
2a: creative ability
b: ability to confront and deal with a problem: RESOURCEFULNESS – “use your imagination and get us out of here”
c: the thinking or active mind: INTEREST stories that fired the imagination
3a: a creation of the mind, especially an idealized or poetic creation
b: fanciful or empty assumption
Figment of one’s imagination is defined as something made up, invented, or fabricated; A figment is a product of the imagination.
The Power of Imagination
YHVH imagined ADAM into existence on the 6th day (His creative ability or the Hebrew word BARA) then He formed him on Shabbat (YATSAR – To form out of a formerly-created image).
We see the power of imagination at work when Joshua and Caleb imagined themselves and their Elohim greater than the Giants in Canaan.
Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it.” Numbers 13:30 NASB
And they spoke to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, saying, “The land which we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. If the Lord is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us—a land which flows with milk and honey. Numbers 14:7-8 NASB
The other 10 “tourists” imagined themselves as grasshoppers. They mentally demoted Elohim to the size of an insect!
We also know David imagined victory over an uncircumcised Philistine giant coming against himself, a covenanted young warrior. He imagined the head of Goliath rolling on the ground like the lion and the bear he had previously killed.
Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, since he has taunted the armies of the living God.” 1 Samuel 17:36 NASB
Sanctified Imaginations versus Fantasy
Sanctified Imaginations are based on our knowledge of Yah and His Word, ridden by the Holy Spirit which is Prophetic in nature.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 NASB
Fantasy is based on your inordinate desires and or fears.
Remember, whatever Job feared happened; He had imagined the scenario in his own mind.
For what I fear comes upon me, and what I dread befalls me. Job 3:25 NASB
When we meditate on Yah’s Word and fellowship with the Holy Spirit in prayer and worship (especially praying in tongues), He begins to paint a picture in our minds. He pours His mind into ours – that is sanctified imagination. Remember, the battle for our souls always rages in the mind.
For the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly but powerful through God for the tearing down of strongholds. We are tearing down false arguments and every high-minded thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. We are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Messiah— 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 TLV
When we fellowship with our self-centered and selfish desires, watch ungodly movies, soak in digital or non-digital information, engage in too much entertainment and news – or focus on our fears, our setbacks, our anger, our disappointment, etc. – then Satan takes the opportunity to download his perverted mind into us. Those are fantasies. Most people are filled with fantasy. Fantasy can be exciting or horrific, but it is still fantasy and it poisons our minds.
Then Adonai saw that the wickedness of humankind was great on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their heart was only evil all the time. So Adonai regretted that He made humankind on the earth, and His heart was deeply pained. Genesis 6:5-6 TLV
In the days of Noah Elohim killed all of mankind because they had evil thinking. This is as serious as thinking goes! They did not imagine the Creator’s thoughts but they relished in their own sinful, faithless and self-centered fantasies. They chose to fellowship with Satan instead, the originator of sinful fantasies.
Man is able to think and to imagine; it is a God-given created attribute. However, thoughts are like “fish” that need water to swim in. Thoughts need a spiritual base. It is either the Holy Spirit or evil spirits.
Sanctified Imaginations are founded in the dynamic trio that makes Yah’s world go round:
Faith, Hope and Love.
That is why we are commanded to meditate on the Torah for prosperity and success.
This book of the Torah should not depart from your mouth—you are to meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will make your ways prosperous and then you will be successful. Joshua 1:8 TLV
And we are told to keep our minds focused upon things lovely, virtuous and of good report in order to keep ourselves whole and holy.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any virtue and if there is anything worthy of praise—dwell on these things. Philippians 4:8 TLV
Our life will follow the course that our thoughts are charting. The map they are reading is our Imaginations.
Our lives are surrendered to Yeshua only to the extent our Imaginations are rooted in Him.
Regrets about the past and imagining how your life “could have been” are indeed figments of the imagination. These are fantasies and are toxic to the soul. They keep people in an endless cycle of regret and depression.
It’s one thing to learn from past mistakes, which is commendable. It’s another to live in regret of past mistakes, which is deadly and keeps people stagnant – in a dark hole of hopelessness.
We are commanded to forget what is behind us in order to move forward. Whether these are victories or failures, we cannot repeat them by living in them. We should remember whatever is commendable and gives glory to Yah. We can learn from past mistakes, but we cannot live in our Imaginations of this past , or mull over regrets like “what if” or any other “wishful thinking”.
Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself as having taken hold of this. But this one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal for the reward of the upward calling of God in Messiah Yeshua. Philippians 3:13-14 TLV
To sum it all up
We need to ask our Creator, who gave us the ability to think and imagine, to ride our minds by His Holy Spirit.
As we constantly meditate on His Word (above any circumstances, any movies, any news, any digital information, any past memories), as we pray in tongues, declare His word, thank Him and worship Him, then we will think like He does – and we will Paint His Picture in our minds.
“For as the heavens are higher than earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and snow come down from heaven, and do not return there without having watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to sow and bread to eat, so My word will be that goes out from My mouth. It will not return to Me in vain, but will accomplish what I intend, and will succeed in what I sent it for. “Yes, you will go out with joy and be led forth with Shalom. The mountains and the hills will break forth before you singing, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands! Isaiah 55:9-12
This is the outcome of a sanctified imagination: Joy and Shalom!

Join Archbishop Dominiquae Bierman in the continuation of this inspiring message from the Uniting Nations for Israel Sukkot Tour. The Jewish people have faced giants throughout history, but still they prospered, having a strong spiritual foundation in Torah. Hear how our power to overcome giants today requires the shedding of replacement theology – a giant in our midst.
