Shabbat shalom, dearly beloved!
Even modern science is beginning to agree that the soul exists apart from our body and that it is eternal.
The results not only defy our classical intuition but suggest that a part of the mind — the soul — is immortal and exists outside of space and time. Your body is on earth, and your spirit is seated in the Third Heavens, according to the Bible.
“And He raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Messiah Yeshua.” Ephesians 2:6 TLV
But where is your soul? It is inside our body (thus not in the Third Heavens).
“But I have calmed and quieted my soul—like a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned child is my soul within me.” Psalms 131:2 TLV
Our soul can be torn and fall captive; the word below for soul is Nephesh, which is not the body part of us but our innermost being, or our soul. This is the seat of the mind, will, and emotions.
“Deliver my soul from the sword—my only one from the power of the dog.” Psalms 22:21 TLV
A sword can cut bodies into pieces, and dogs can tear limbs apart. However, David is talking about the Nephesh, the soul that can be cut into pieces and torn apart.
When we die, what leaves our body? The soul leaves the body. And in fact, some believe that the soul has weight.
A researcher by the name of MacDougall weighed a certain mass that was missing after the passing of a person in 1907. He came to the conclusion that after one of his research subjects died, immediately after he expired, there were exactly 21 grammes missing in his body weight. His experiment was not sound enough. However, since most scientists cannot understand or accept anything spiritual, they dismissed it as a fable and refused any further inquiries on the subject. Unfortunately, most medical science treats the individual as if it does not have a soul apart from measurable and provable molecules, atoms, chemistry, and brain waves. Thus, medical science has very limited answers to human woes and concentrates on medicating symptoms only.
Some people who have had a clinical death have left their bodies, and they described seeing their bodies on the operating table or on the bed while they were outside of the body.

I tried to explore this by evaluating a variety of studies and case reports evaluating consciousness, cognitive awareness, and recall in people who survived cardiac arrest. They noted that some people report experiencing a separation from their body during resuscitation, and some even reported an awareness of events they wouldn’t have seen from their actual perspective.
In addition, one study included in the review noted that two participants reported having both visual and auditory experiences while in cardiac arrest. Only one was well enough to follow up, but he gave an accurate, detailed description of what took place for about three minutes of his resuscitation from cardiac arrest. Even though science is skeptical about these experiences, it does not discard them as untrue.
The soul is a separate entity from the body, and the soul is immortal and eternal.
“Do not be amazed at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice and come out! Those who have done good will come to a resurrection of life, and those who have done evil will come to a resurrection of judgment.” John 5:28–29 TLV
The soul travels, and in the New Age, it is called “Astral Projections”. Your soul can be aligned and communing either with the First, Second, or Third Heavens while you are alive. When you die, your soul goes somewhere, for souls never cease to exist.
Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake—some to everlasting life, and others to shame and everlasting contempt.” Daniel 12:2 TLV
Notice all these souls that came out of their graves when Yeshua rose from the dead.
“And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the kedoshim who were sleeping were raised to life.” Matthew 27:52 TLV
Obviously, their natural bodies had decayed by then, but their immortal souls that were sleeping in the dust were dressed in a new glorified body.
When Adam sinned, he died that day because his soul got detached from the Creator. His spirit part died, and his soul fell into captivity to the snake, though his body did not die.
“But of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, you must not eat. For when you eat from it, you most assuredly will die.” Genesis 2:17 TLV
When we are born again, our soul gets reattached to the Creator, and we receive a new spirit, through which we get restored to a personal relationship with Him.
“Therefore, if anyone is in the Messiah, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 TLV
However, the soul is not “new”. It has old traumas and old habits. Therefore, we need to “work out our salvation”. This is at the soul level.
“Therefore, my loved ones, just as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now even more in my absence—work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” Philippians 2:12 TLV
We need to command our thoughts (which reside in our soul, not our spirit) to be captive to Yeshua. If not, your soul will fall into captivity with the enemy. There are no two ways about this.
“For the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly but powerful through God for the tearing down of strongholds. We are tearing down false arguments and every high-minded thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. We are taking every thought captive to the obedience of the Messiah.” 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 TLV
Even when we are in this life, the soul can be captive in Sheol, even if our bodies are on earth.
The soul can travel and leave our body as well.
In the scripture below, the soul of King David has fallen captive to Sheol. What is Sheol? Is it hell? Is it the Second Heavens where Satan’s Central Command is? People who are in clinical depression often describe themselves as “being in hell”.
“Adonai, you brought my soul up from Sheol. You kept me alive, so I would not go down to the pit.” Psalms 30:4 TLV
Souls can be captive to the devil and his cohorts in the Second Heavens, where wickedness resides.
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the powers, against the worldly forces of this darkness, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armour of God, so that you may be able to resist when the times are evil, and after you have done everything, to stand firm.” Ephesians 6:12–13 TLV
I remember when I was in the occult for only 4 and 1/2 months prior to my salvation. I was demon-possessed for sure, and I felt that my soul had been snatched from me. The emptiness was impossible to endure. We were in a bioenergy “grounding” session, and they were teaching us to lie on the floor and ground ourselves to the earth to cause our soul to return to our body after “astral projections” and the like. I was lying on the floor, desperate to get my “travelling soul” back.
There was a man sitting above me, looking at me with compassion and praying for me. He looked different than all the rest. When he said, “I am praying for you,” my wayward and captive soul returned to my body. This was a very frightening experience, and I believe the kind man who prayed for me must have been Yeshua!
Our souls can fall captive, be torn, be cut into pieces, and leave our bodies when we have open doors through sin, childhood trauma, sexual abuse, immorality, idolatry, and, of course, any kind of new age practices such as yoga, meditation, acupuncture, witchcraft, the occult, and the like. Even tattoos can cause the soul to fall captive, to be cut, and to be torn, for YHVH forbade us to tattoo and cut ourselves for any reason.
“You are not to make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead or make any tattoo marks upon yourself. I am Adonai.” Leviticus 19:28 TLV
When we surrender to Yeshua, we need to train our soul to commune with Him rather than with carnal things; that is an act of our will.
Souls, or portions of them, can be captive in the second heaven. That is the case for many mentally ill patients and many addicts; their souls, or portions of them, are in the hands of Satan under the custody of demons or fallen angels. A soul needs to want to be free.
In the movie “The Sound of Freedom,” the girl who was in captivity to the drug lord in Colombia had to cooperate with her deliverer; if not, both of them would have been killed. In the same way, even souls in captivity have a free will to cooperate, to want to get delivered or not. If a soul prefers the “familiarity” of captivity more than the freedom of surrendering to our deliverer, Yeshua, that soul will remain in captivity by choice.
“He was not able to do any miracle, except that He laid hands on a few sick people and healed them. And he was astonished because of their unbelief. And he was going around among the villages teaching.” Mark 6:5-6 TLV
When we minister healing or deliverance, we can only go as far as the will of the soul of the individual we are ministering to. That is why Yeshua could do no miracles in Nazareth. That is why forced conversions are not real, and the Jews forcibly converted during the time of the Spanish Inquisition led a double life as crypto Jews.
When a born-again person falls from grace because of disobedience or rebellion, the most merciful thing is to deliver him to Satan for the destruction of the flesh.
“You are to turn such a fellow over to Satan for the destruction of his fleshly nature, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Yeshua.” 1 Corinthians 5:5 TLV
When the flesh (the body) is destroyed and thus carnal things do not have a pull, the captive soul is free to choose to call on the name of Yeshua and be saved or not. If that soul calls on His name even while taking his last breath, then it will unite with the newborn spirit that is sitting in the Third Heavens as it leaves the destroyed flesh or body that Satan has destroyed.
But if that soul chooses not to call on the name of Yeshua, even if that person has known Yeshua in the past, that soul will be disconnected or detached from their spirit and will be then carried to hell, escorted by the fallen angels.
“For it is impossible for those who once were enlightened—having tasted of the heavenly gift and become partakers of the Ruach ha-Kodesh, and having tasted the good word of God and the powers of the olam ha-ba, and then having fallen away—to renew again to repentance, since they are again crucifying Ben-Elohim for themselves and publicly disgracing Him.” Hebrews 6:4-6 TLV
Our soul or portions of our soul can be in captivity to Satan and his demons, communicating with these evil entities in the Second Heavens, where the Central Command of their wicked Kingdom of Darkness is. When people are captive, it means their souls are captive.
This is what causes them to be mentally sick, disassociated, schizophrenic, clinically depressed, bipolar, and even addicts to substances, pornography, entertainment, money, and so on. We will be captive to whoever or whatever becomes the centre of our lives. entertainment, money, alcohol, drugs, sex, other religions, or even people.
Ungodly soul ties and codependent relationships must be repented of and renounced if you are to be free. Unholy emotional attachments are dangerous, and they are a kind of idolatry. When you say, “I cannot live without so and so” or “if he leaves me, I will kill myself,” that is an unhealthy emotional attachment. Your soul then has an open door and can fall into captivity to demons.
“You shall have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3 TLV
Some souls become captives because of sexual, verbal, physical, emotional, or ritual abuse since infancy or childhood. It can be a very long process to set a soul like that free, as that soul needs to be restored to even trust or believe that there is a Creator who loves them. These are the poor, captive souls of sexually trafficked children and even children that grew up in homes where their minds or bodies were abused by other supposedly “safe” adults.
This includes children of a single-parent family where the other absent parent was demonized to them. This parental demonization can cause great harm to the souls of the children, especially when evil words about the other parent keep being repeated again and again. This conditions the minds of the children.
Everything that is repeated again and again to a child can cause either freedom in the soul or captivity of the soul. Children need repetitive rituals to learn. This can be good rituals like brushing their teeth, reading a Bible story, or saying a prayer before bed, or evil rituals such as
By fondling and molesting the child in their private parts every day, a little child gets conditioned as if it were “normal”.
“Train up a child in the way he should go; when he is old, he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6 TLV
The Torah instructs parents to keep repeating the commandments of God to their children throughout the day. This constant repetition conditions them to believe in and revere Yah.
“These words, which I am commanding you today, are to be on your heart. You are to teach them diligently to your children and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7 TLV
Children that have been abused by evil rituals, whether verbal or physical, will grow into adults with souls in captivity. The process of freeing a soul conditioned from childhood may be a long one, even after their first salvation experience. These adults may be believers, but they need a very loving, non-judgmental, yet noncompromising faith environment to get set free.
Demons will leave them in the name of Yeshua, but the restoration of the soul from the ravages of captivity may take a longer time.
“Now may the God of Shalom Himself make you completely holy, and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept complete, blameless, at the coming of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23 TLV
Ultimately, you need to want to be set free and must cooperate with your deliverer and whoever He uses to set you free and retrain your soul. Discipline and godly rituals are very important to be able to retrain a soul that has been in captivity. Rituals such as armoring yourself, praying in tongues, meditating on the word day and night, and setting prayer times can be life-changing.
“This book of the Torah should not depart from your mouth—you are to meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will make your ways prosperous, and then you will be successful.” Joshua 1:8 TLV
If your soul is captive, the only hope is to surrender fully to Yeshua. Partial surrender will not work. Then join with like-minded people where you can grow in faith, in the Word, and in the Ruach. It is in fellowship, where others also minister to you and where you are accountable to anointed leadership, that you can be set free. But the first step to freedom starts with full surrender to Yeshua and to His will for your life.

Abba Shebashamayim, Father in Heaven, forgive me for all my sins, crimes, and rebellions against you. Please save my soul and take it out of captivity. Yeshua, Jewish Messiah and Saviour, I humble my heart, put all my trust in your finished work at the Cross, and I fully surrender to you and to your will. I give you my entire soul and body. Please set me free and make me whole to serve you all my days. Amen.
And then you must say no to sin, to Satan, to bitterness and unforgiveness, burn every witchcraft article, immoral or idolatrous item, and close every door to the demonic realm in Yeshua’s name!
“Behold, I have given you authority to trample upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.” Luke 10:19 TLV
