ATG – Addicts Turning To God, #12

In everything give thanks, for this is God’s will for you in Messiah Yeshua. 1 Thess. 5:18

Shabbat Shalom, dearly beloved!

It is time for the 12th part of a special series of Shabbat Letters based on my book ATG – Addicts Turning to God. These insights that the Lord gave me on treating addicts can save you from much frustration and can change the lives of many addicts as they turn to God.

Patience for the Process

Plenty of grace is needed when you care for an addict. Their souls have been so perverted and twisted by the ‘snake,’ that what seems like a minor change to you is a major change for them. They need to be encouraged. Encourage every change, as this will give them the strength to go on. The ‘siblings’ need to notice even the smallest changes and give them words of encouragement. When they feel that they want to give up, remind them how far God has brought them. Make things lighter for them by helping them to turn their eyes to what God has done rather than what the devil can accomplish. Show them a Great God and a little devil. The devil spent years showing them how ‘big’ he is. Now it’s time for them to know God’s greatness and expose satan’s lies. Do not ever tire from exposing satan’s lies to the light of God’s Word. (Psalm 8)

Word Prayers

One of the most effective tools for change is teaching your ATG to trust the promises of God and to incorporate them into their daily life. Give them Word assignments in areas that they need – like God’s love, holiness, power and anointing, the Blood, etc., by having them write Word Prayers, personalizing the Scriptures. For those who are musically inclined, I suggest having them sing their prayers as a new song to the Lord. Have the Word Prayers typed and put on the wall near his/her bed. Tell them to repeat them day and night – as they get up in the morning and as they go to sleep – and to meditate on the Word day and night. Then they will be successful and will be able to pray correctly with faith. (Joshua 1:8; John 15:7)

Praise sends the devil away

Praise and Thanksgiving

Keep praise music going in the house 24 hours a day. Do music sessions when all join in and learn to praise God. Use tambourines and any praise instruments available. It is amazing how praise ‘sends the devil away!’ Teach them to thank God in every situation and for everything – even for what looks and feels bad. In 2 Chronicles 20, we see how thanksgiving to God and praise put the enemies of Israel to flee! Thanksgiving and praise are the most powerful weapons of warfare that God has given us.

Once I was ministering to an ATG who had had a horrible migraine for many days. She wanted to take painkillers, and I did not let her, as she was addicted to taking chemical medication for everything. She had tried to ‘bind’ it and to declare the Word, and nothing seemed to work. So, I said, “Let’s go on our knees and thank God for this headache.” She was very surprised but did it with me anyway. Peace came, and the horrible migraine left.
(1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Work and Chores

Please make sure that the ATG works if he/she is able. If not, then assign him/her to household/other maintenance chores. Do not let them be idle. That is detrimental, as their mind will go in circles. Let them clean, do the gardening, cook, write, type, sew, do secretarial jobs, or work outside if their condition permits. In my case, I felt the leading of the Spirit to hire and pay wages to an ATG to do all my housekeeping. In other cases, they need to be volunteers.

In some rehabilitation centers, they do not let them have their own money for fear that they would spend in on alcohol or drugs. That is OK, also. However, in some other cases, they have their own money and have to learn to give tithes and offerings and be accountable for their money. Do this however the Holy Spirit leads you, but do not let them be idle!
