Torah Portion B’REISHEET – B’reisheet (Genesis) 1:1-6:8
Simcha Torah 5780 Special Edition
But He said, “Truly, I tell you, ‘No prophet is accepted in his own hometown.’ Luke 4:24 TLV
Shabbat shalom dearly beloveds!
This Sukkot, we are removing all the stumbling blocks keeping us from true joy and the fullness of His anointing and power in us.
Last week I wrote about the people, circumstances, or the things in your life that affect you just like Kryptonite rendered Superman powerless in the well-known comic series.
According to the series, Kryptonite is a fictional radioactive matter that came from Superman’s planet of origin, which was destroyed, and fragments of it were scattered throughout the universe. Comics are comics, of course, but most of them do show us some important life principles.
In this case, the dreaded Kryptonite that rendered powerless an otherwise all-powerful hero came from his own “familiar planet.” This radioactive material knew how to attack the weak places of Superman. In other words, it knew him.
In the same way, “familiar spirits” (yes, demons!) know us from our old life or “old planet”, if you will. Though we may be a New Creation now and even have become mighty servants of Yah, these familiar spirits carry the memory of the “old you.”
These spirits have probably been in your family for generations, and they are there because of generational curses and iniquity. Therefore, even when you walk with Yeshua, they will try to weaken you as they attack the “weak places” – just like Amalek attacked Israel from the rear. He went for the feeble, the stragglers, the women, and young children. He had no fear of God.
“Remember what Amalek did to you along the way as you came out from Egypt— how he happened upon you along the way and attacked those among you in the rear, all the stragglers behind you, when you were tired and weary—he did not fear God. Deuteronomy 25:17-18 TLV
Amalek is the grandson of Esau (the brother of Jacob) that sold his inheritance for one meal. Amalek is, therefore, in the family of Israel and he still attacked the weak ones with no scruples.
Now Timna was a concubine to Esau’s son Eliphaz, and she bore Amalek to Eliphaz. These are the sons of Esau’s wife Adah. Genesis 36:12 TLV
The familiar spirit of jealousy and murder was passed from Esau to his grandson Amalek.
So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, “Let the time for mourning my father draw near, so that I can kill my brother Jacob!” Genesis 27:41 TLV
You may have people like Amalek in your family that are jealous and wants to harm you. They are possessed of some familiar spirits, and they want to bring you down. What did Jacob do to escape this Kryptonite in Esau?
So on that day Esau returned on his way to Seir, but Jacob journeyed to Sukkot and built a house for himself, and for his livestock he made booths. That is the reason that place is called Sukkot. Genesis 33:16-17 TLV
He escaped and kept his distance from him always. No peace is possible in cases like this –only separation. David did the same with the Kryptonite in Saul, who was his own father-in-law. He escaped for his life.
Then David fled from Naioth at Ramah, came before Jonathan and said, “What have I done? What is my crime? What is my sin against your father that he should be seeking my life?” 1 Samuel 20:1 TLV
Do not confront your Kryptonite family members full of familiar spirits that want to bring you down. Separate from them!
We see Abraham needed to be separated from Lot, who was his Kryptonite, a nephew full of familiar spirits of jealousy:
So Abram said to Lot, “Please, let there be no strife between me and you, or between my shepherds and yours, since we are relatives. Isn’t the whole land before you? Please separate yourself from me. If to the left, then I’ll go to the right, and if to the right, then I’ll go to the left.” Genesis 13:8-9 TLV
Consider also that Yeshua could do no miracles in Nazareth – his hometown or “his original planet.” The otherwise all-powerful Jewish Messiah was rendered powerless by the familiarity of the town’s folk that knew him from childhood.
Then Yeshua began saying to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own house.” He was not able to do any miracle, except that He laid hands on a few sick people and healed them. Mark 6:4-5 TLV
Even His brothers and sisters were jealous and full of familiar spirits. At some point, they even recruited the mother, who should have known better than to interfere with Yeshua’s ministry. Familiar spirits were pure “Kryptonite” to Yeshua, just as they are to any Servant of Yah in this day.
What did Yeshua do?
In Nazareth, when they tried to kill Him, He simply disappeared. He separated Himself from them and left town.
Rising up, they drove Him out of the town and brought Him as far as the edge of the mountain on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him off the cliff. But passing through the middle of them, He went on His way. Luke 4:29-30 TLV
There is no prophet in His “familiar” land.
When his mother and brothers came to Capernaum, they tried to convince Him to “stop this megalomanic nonsense” of casting out demons and supernatural healings, even though there was a crowd following of about 20,000 people at any given time.
Did Yeshua bother to go and greet them and play the “polite” game? No! His famous words reverberate until today,
Someone said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, trying to speak to You.” But to the one telling Him this, Yeshua responded, “Who is My mother? And who are My brothers?” Stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers. For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother.” Matthew 12:47-50 TLV
Did He love His mom and brothers? Absolutely! But unless they got in line with Yah’s plan for His life, He would not let them stop or destroy His Ministry.
He kept His distance from them as long as they harbored Kryptonite-like familiar spirits that took Him and His mission lightly.
Later on, His mom and His brother Yaakov would wake up – but until then, He separated from them.
- Stay away from those who take you familiarly and do not honor who you are in Yah. Guard your Mission and Anointing zealously even from family and “old friends”.
- Forgive them and pray for them.
- Keep your focus and your mission. Keep going forward until you hear “well done, my good and faithful servant”.
His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful with a little, so I’ll put you in charge of much. Enter into your master’s joy!’ Matthew 25:21 TLV
The battle is very fierce in these End Times. Find yourself a “Sukkot place” like Jacob did and separate from the Esau and Amalek familiar spirits that are like Kryptonite to your life and Divine Calling.
Now the God of shalom will soon crush satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Yeshua be with you. Romans 16:20 TLV
