Who Are You?

Torah Portion VAYETZE – B’Reisheet (Genesis) 28:10-32:3(2)

For as he thinks within himself, so is he. Proverbs 23:7a TLV

Shabbat shalom dearly beloved!

Have you ever asked yourself the question: “Who am I?” Or maybe after being married to someone for many years the question has come forth, “Who is he?” or “Who is she?” Another question that is asked when someone rubs you the wrong way is: “Who does she thinks she is?” I believe we have all asked ourselves these questions at some point. People all over the world are “searching for themselves” and never seem to find the answer. It seems that we all wear masks of identities that are not ours. The question really is “Who are we?” There is a simple answer to this question…

We are whoever we THINK we are.

Our thought life affects our identity much more than most of us realize. Our mindsets form an image inside of us of who we are and how are we to behave according to that image. If we form the image of a victim of life’s circumstances, then our attitudes, words and actions will comply with that image and prevent us from having a breakthrough that leads to victory.

Who are you

Victim or Victor?

Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self—created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:23,24

I was watching the movie of a young Israeli soldier who, during one of Israel’s wars, woke up in the hospital without one of his legs. From then on, he needed to decide whether or not he would see himself as an invalid, unable to enjoy sports or any physical activity. He had to decide if he would see himself as a “victim of war” or as a “hero of war”. He chose the hero image. He diligently went to work to develop and train his body in spite of his terrible handicap. He became a champion rower and competed in rowing competitions. He developed the muscles of his arms as he chose a sport that would match his situation. When he shared his moving story, there was no hint of regret or self-pity in his voice. He had chosen the path of victory and not of victimization.

Our interpretation of life’s circumstances will determine the identity that we take on. Most people derive their identity, not only from their experience, but from their interpretations of the experience and often from the opinions of those around them.

It is important to revisit our thoughts and see if they are helping us to fulfill our mission in life or not. We must evaluate if they are displaying the wonderful creation that the Creator Himself made us to be. We were born to display His image and likeness, to be winners, to be lovers, to be fearless, courageous and compassionate. We were born to be creative, faithful and wise; to be givers, to be sacrificial, to be joyous and trusting. How do I know this? Because the Holy Scriptures provide us with the information that we need in order to adopt the right and righteous identity.

When Yeshua was asked to show His disciples, the Father, His answer was – If you have seen me, you have seen the Father. John 14:9

Who are you

How do we see the Messiah?

We are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Messiah—2 Corinthians 10:5 TLV

If we begin to focus on He actions and start to imitate what we read, what we see in His word, instead of the mindsets that have been formed in our minds due to sin, trauma, setbacks or impositions of religion, we will start reforming our identity to His image and likeness. In order to do this we must take a journey of Torah and Spirit. As we read His Word in its totality from Genesis to Revelation, and pray in the Holy Spirit and for the Ruach HaKodesh to reveal Messiah to us, we will discover who we are created to be.

Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk just as He walked. I John 2:6

Yeshua is the Last Adam. All the attributes YHVH wanted in Human Beings appear in the Person of His Jewish Son. Whenever you get a glimpse of Him, start imitating Him, identifying yourself with Him and with His nature and character traits. He did not walk the earth as a God, but as Adam. He always called Himself the Son of Man. Later on, His disciples who wrote about Him in the Gospels and Apostolic letters, called Him the Son of Yah (God). But He wanted us to be able to follow Him, to imitate Him as Adam. He walked in love and so can we.

The one who says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in the darkness. 1 John 2:9

We cannot do this “religiously”. This can only come from intimate fellowship with Him through His Ruach, His Spirit, and the Word, Torah and all the Scriptures.

As we are personally mentored by Him, we can then follow Him, imitate Him and take on His identity more and more. This process starts on the day we say YES to Him. It starts the day we surrendered our life to Him and, in that moment, we start a JOURNEY. It is a Journey of discovery. We can become more like Him as we discover Him. This discovery happens though His Word, including His Torah, by being continually filled by the Spirit and praying in the Spirit. As we see His interventions in our life, as we worship Him, as we experience the gifts and power of the Holy Spirit we can see Him more fully. We discover him through His forgiveness, grace, mercy, and His justice. Then we gradually form His Identity in us. We begin to display the Signature of the Creator in our attitudes, behaviors and action.

When we choose to trust and obey Him, we establish His nature in us. This is not about giving a mental ascent to who He is, but rather, emulating Him, imitating Him and following Him faithfully. It is about self-denial which is denying the false identity that sin, the flesh, fears, traumas, opinions of others, and our cultural make-up, has placed on us. It is about taking on His Identity in us. His identity is displayed creatively in each individual. Each one of us displays some facets of the Creator Himself.

God created humankind in His image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them. Genesis 1:27

Who are you

Ask yourself the following questions and write them in complete honesty:

  • Who do you think you are?
  • What do you identify with?
  • Who do you identify with? (father, mother, tv hero, your pastor, etc.)

In what way is that person/personality you identify with like Yeshua?

Jot down all the thoughts you have about yourself on a piece of paper in a completely honest way without pretense (don’t try to be “nice”, religious or self-righteous). Go through it and put it to the test.

  • Is this who YHVH created me to be?
  • Do I want to keep these thoughts about myself or do I want to discard them?
  • Do I need new thoughts about myself? Ask the Holy Spirit to show you.

If so, which new thoughts am I going to think about myself?

Choose supporting scriptures for your new thoughts. Write them down, memorize them, declare them and walk them. These thoughts will create who you are and who you will be.

I encourage you today, to join the Journey of Transformation into His Image and Likeness, into the Adam, male or female, that He created you to be. I encourage you to deny all the self that has been molded into the image and likeness of this world. I encourage you to give up the mindsets that have been formed which are contrary to His will and nature. I encourage you to fellowship with Him, His Holy Spirit and His Word. Spending time with Him will allow Yeshua to reveal Himself to you, and in you, more and more until your thoughts align with His thoughts. There is absolutely no replacement for intimate prayer, talking with Him, praying in tongues and meditating on His Word. There is no replacement for simple childlike trust, surrender and obedience.

You will discover that you have an awesome identity in Him!

For You have created my conscience. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am awesomely, wonderfully made! Wonderful are Your works— and my soul knows that very well. Psalm 139:13,14 TLV

Book of the week:

From Sickology to a Healthy Logic by Archbishop Dr. Dominiquae Bierman
This book is the product of 18 years of walking through psychiatric hospitals catering to my loved ones. I have seen, prayed for, and visited countless mentally sick patients. I have talked with many psychiatrists and psychologists. I have had to fight for the mental wellbeing of my own loved ones, including my mother, my brother, my children and some of my spiritual children and disciples.

However, my personal experiences would have not been enough to write this book. The Word of God is the Highest Authority as the textbook on the Human Mind. After all, it was Elohim, The Creator of Heaven and Earth, who created our minds! Of course, He did not leave us without an instruction manual!

Therefore, above all psychology, or any other “ology”, is the Word of God. In it you will find all the answers to the woes and illnesses of Mankind. The Great News is that this Eternal Book contains THE CURE, and therefore, my purpose is that you will find the infallible and eternal cure for all distressed minds.
