Torah Portion VA’ETCHANAN – Devarim (Deuteronomy) 3:23-7:11 Haftarah: Isaiah 40:1-26
“You are not to pollute the land in which you are. Blood pollutes the land, and no atonement can be made for land polluted by bloodshed except by the blood of the one who sheds it.” Numbers 35:33 TLV
Shabbat shalom, dearly beloved,
The cycle of bloodshed can never stop until the avenger of blood kills the murderer.
“The blood avenger himself may put the murderer to death. When he finds him, he is to kill him.” Numbers 35:19 TLV
However, the Holy Scriptures make a distinction between unintentional manslaughter and intentional murder. The one who unintentionally killed someone, and it was an accident, could run to a city of refuge before his trial by the assembly. If he were found not guilty of intentional murder, he would be allowed to stay in the city of refuge until the death of the officiating high priest. If he left the city of refuge, the avenger of blood, a family member of the victim, had the right to kill him.
“And should the blood avenger find him outside the city limits of the refuge city, the blood avenger may put him to death without being guilty of his blood.” Numbers 35:27 TLV
For manslaughter, the only hope was the City of Refuge; he could go nowhere else. It was a kind of benevolent prison with kind conditions. He was free within its walls only.
The assembly must protect the manslayer from the avenger of blood. The assembly should send him back to the city of refuge to which he had fled, and he is to remain there until the death of the Kohen Gadol, who was anointed with the holy oil.” Numbers 35:25 TLV
However, for the one who intentionally murdered, there was only one option: blood for blood. The blood avenger of the family of the victim was obligated to kill the murderer. No ransom would be accepted, because spilled blood pollutes the land.
“You are not to accept ransom for the life of a murderer. He deserves to die, and he is to die.” Numbers 35:31 TLV
The only way to cleanse the land was with more bloodshed, blood for blood. This endless cycle of bloodshed continued until Yeshua came. When He was hanging on that excruciating Roman cross, He said, It is finished.
“When Yeshua tasted the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!’ And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.” John 19:30 TLV
What did He mean by “it is finished”? It meant that a sinless Blood Sacrifice had satisfied all the requirements of the Torah for sins committed, murder included. By taking all the guilt upon Himself, His blood would satisfy every avenger of blood. The endless bloodshed cycle was finished.
“and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, making peace through the blood of His cross—whether things on earth or things in heaven!” Colossians 1:20 TLV
This is why it is so shocking that the Church that emerged from the Council of Nicaea in the 4th century began to call for the murder of Jews. The reason was “the Jews killed Christ; they deserve to die or at least live in complete humiliation.” Laying aside the fact that the Romans killed the Messiah and not the Jews, blaming anyone for the murder of Yeshua nullifies His work on the Cross. It is no wonder that the Church fell into apostasy and was thrust into the Dark Ages.
“Now the Ruach clearly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, following deceitful spirits and teachings of demons.” 1 Timothy 4:1 TLV
For the land to be cleansed from blood pollution, only one blood is needed. The Royal Blood of the One who took all sin and all guilt upon Himself. Indeed, it is finished.
“Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous one, his thoughts; let him return to Adonai, so He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” Isaiah 55:7 TLV
Let us come back to YHVH through the blood sacrifice of the only blood that can cleanse the land and every human from even the most hideous sins, yes, even murder. This is not a cheap redemption or a mental ascent, but blood for blood. He gave His blood so that those who put their faith in Him, in full surrender to His will, will be fully forgiven by a Holy God. His blood for your blood. His life for your life. Would you give Him your sin, your blood life to Him today in full surrender?
He desires all men to be saved and come into the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:4 TLV
Pray with me
Abba, Father in Heaven, I have not enough words to thank you for spilling the holy blood of Your Son, Yeshua, the Jewish Messiah, for me. I choose to let go of my own blood life and to give it to You in exchange for His blood; that is the only way to cleanse me from all sin and every kind of wickedness and perversion. Yeshua, I say YES to you, NO to sin, wickedness, perversion, and iniquity, and to the devil, and I give you my life forever; take it over, I pray. I am yours to do as You please. Amen.
“For the life of the creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your lives—for it is the blood that makes atonement because of the life.” Leviticus 17:11 TLV
