Torah Portion KI TAVO – Devarim (Deuteronomy) 26:1-29:8 Haftarah: Isaiah 60:1-22
Shabbat shalom, dearly beloved.
The word for number 10 in Hebrew is ESER –עשר
The same root word also means riches. There is a divine biblical connection between the number ten and riches; it appears in the book of Genesis. Abraham gave Melchizedek, the king of Salem, a tithe, ten percent of all his spoils of war.
Then Melechizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine—he was a priest of El Elyon. He blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by El Elyon, Creator of heaven and earth, and blessed be El Elyon, Who gave over your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.” Genesis 14:18-20 TLV

Abram gave him “a tenth of everything.” From then on, the principle of the tithe comes into play much before the Torah introduces it to the People of Israel through Moses.
“All the tithe of the land, whether from the seed of the land or the fruit of the trees, belongs to Adonai, for it is holy to Adonai.” Leviticus 27:30 TLV
When the Torah is given after Mt. Sinai, we learn that the tithe of everything is kadosh, holy, and set apart to YHVH. It is so holy that if someone decided to use any of it, he had to pay a twenty percent fine in addition to the tithe.
“If a man redeems anything of his tithe, he must add a fifth part to it.” Leviticus 27:31 TLV
Later on, the Prophet Malachi refers to the giving of tithes as the key to repentance. Paying our tithes to the Most High is the beginning of returning and repentance.
“From the days of your ancestors you have turned aside from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot. Yet you say, “How should we return?” “Will a man rob God? For you are robbing me!” But you say, “How have we robbed You?” “In the tithe and the offering.” Malachi 3:7-8 TLV

Withholding our tithes from YHVH is likened to “robbing God,” and it is the eighth of the Ten Commandments. Most believers in Messiah are oblivious to the fact that withholding our tithes from Adonai makes one a thief. Many people complain about their finances not being enough; however, the main issue is idolatry and theft. Withholding tithes means that your trust is in money or the lack thereof and not in Him who owns all the riches.
“The silver is mine and the gold is mine!”—it is a declaration of Adonai-Tzva’ot.” Haggai 2:8 TLV
Trusting anything or anyone above our Creator is idolatry. Withholding His holy tithe is theft. This is the source for many curses and lack for many of those who call themselves His children.
“Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.” Proverbs 11:28 TLV
It is interesting that after Abram gives his tithes from the spoils of war to the High Priest of Salem, the king of Sodom tries to remunerate Abram for helping him. Yet Abram refuses to get anything from him. Why? He did not want any man to get glory for his covenant prosperity. He wants no strings attached to his wealth. His trust is in Yah alone, and the key is Abram’s faithfulness in giving tithes to the priest who blessed him and prayed for him.
Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people—the possessions take for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I raise my hand in an oath to Adonai, El Elyon, Creator of heaven and earth. Not a thread or even a sandal strap of all that is yours will I take, so you will not say, ‘I’ve made Abram rich!’ Genesis 14:21-23 TLV

There is a direct connection between tithing and prosperity. The root word is the same for both tithes and riches.
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse. Then there will be food in My House. Now test Me in this,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out blessings for you until no one is without enough. I will rebuke the devouring pest for you, so it will not destroy the fruit of your land, nor will your vine be barren in the field,” Adonai-Tzva’ot says. “All the nations will call you blessed. For you will be a land of delight,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot.” Malachi 3:10-12 TLV
However, the question is where to give the tithe or who to give the tithe to. That question is answered from the start when Abram gives us the example: It is to be given to the priest of the Most High who has the power and authority to bless your life. The Torah says the tithes are set apart for the service of the Levitical Priesthood.
“For I have given the tithes that Bnei-Yisrael present to Adonai as an offering to the Levites as an inheritance. That is why I said they would receive no inheritance among Bnei-Yisrael.” Numbers 18:24 TLV
It is this principle that guided Paul in the following admonition.
“Now let the one who is taught the word share all good things with his teacher. Do not be deceived—God is not mocked. For whatever a man sows, that he also shall reap. For the one who sows in the flesh will reap corruption from the flesh. But the one who sows in the Ruach will reap from the Ruach eternal life.” Galatians 6:6-8 TLV

Those who teach us the Word and watch for our souls are likened unto the Levites. There are many believers nowadays that may not even go to church buildings; however, they are fed spiritually by ministers that produce teaching videos and letters or teach online through different platforms. Whether in person or online, our tithes belong to those who feed us spiritually, pray for us, bless us, and watch over our souls.
“The elders who lead well are worthy of honor and honorarium—especially those who work hard in the word and teaching.” 1 Timothy 5:17 TLV
Abram gave it to Melchizedek. By doing this, he activated the blessing that the priest gave him. Had he not tithed to him, most likely Abram would have not become rich, or even worse, he may have not fulfilled his purpose to become the Father of Faith of many nations. The most important test for everyone is “the money test.”
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:21 TLV
Repentance is a matter of the heart, and it starts with the money, and all giving starts with the Holy Tithe. It is not the only prescribed giving, but it is the first prescribed giving, and it is the tenth of everything: ten percent of your wages, your social security pension, your disability pension, your sales profits, or your business or investment profits when cashed. Whether we are rich or of humble means, both the principle and the promise are the same for all. Tithing honors Yah (God) as your source above anything or anyone else.
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse. Then there will be food in My House. Now test Me in this—says Adonai-Tzva’ot—“if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out blessings for you until no one is without enough.” Malachi 3:10 TLV

Testimonies from the students:
I was second in command for a nationwide gang, but with the help of YHVH and GRM Bible School, I have begun to denounce that, after 21 years of membership. The enemy has been attacking me because of it. He knows he is losing a warrior, but I fight a different war for a different Master now. – J.M.
I used to be confused and uncomfortable because I didn’t know what to believe. There are so many different doctrines, all going against each other and teaching different things. I now understand the Gospel better and know my faith’s roots. – E.P
I have been wrong all my life, but now I understand what God wants from me! – R.D.
