Torah Portion VAYAK’HEL-PEKUDEI– Shemot (Exodus) 35:1-40:38 Haftarah: Ezekiel 45:16-46:18
“You must not offer up unauthorized incense on it. Nor should any burnt offering or grain offering be there, nor should you pour any drink offering there.” Exodus 30:9 TLV
Shabbat shalom, dearly beloved,
A move of prayer is rising in the Body of Messiah, and that is good news if our prayers are authorized. Prayer is likened unto incense in the Holy Scriptures.
“May my prayer be set before You like incense. May the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.” Psalms 141:2 TLV
The incense of prayer and intercession is so powerful that it can cause earth-shaking results.
Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a golden incense burner. He was given much incense to offer up along with the prayers of all the kedoshim upon the golden altar before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the kedoshim (saints), rose before God from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the incense burner, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. There were clashes of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and earthquakes. Then the seven angels holding the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.” The Revelation 8:3-6 TLV
Our intercessory prayers can cause judgment and/or revival to be released. It can bring about justice and even the change of regimes and governments. However, both the censer (the human intercessor) and the incense need to be Kadosh (holy-set apart). It is apparently not a light matter to find suitable intercessors that will change the course of history. In times past, He found none.
“I searched for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand in the breach before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it, but I found no one.” Ezekiel 22:30 TLV
The Prophet Isaiah understood that the glory of Yah is in the cloud of incense smoke.
“In the year of King Uzziah’s death, I saw Adonai sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the Temple. Seraphim were standing above Him. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. One called out to another and said, “Holy, holy, holy is Adonai-Tzva’ot! The whole earth is full of His glory.” Then the posts of the door trembled at the voice of those who called, and the house was filled with smoke. Then I said, “Oy to me! For I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I am dwelling among a people of unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, Adonai-Tzva’ot!”” Isaiah 6:1-5 TLV
When the holy incense fills the atmosphere, the fear of Yah falls, and it provokes repentance. Mercy then can be released.
“Then one of the seraphim flew to me, with a glowing coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. He touched my mouth with it and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips. Your iniquity is taken away, and your sins atoned for.”” Isaiah 6:6-7 TLV
However, when unauthorized incense is released by unauthorized people, even if they are priests, it releases judgment. This is what happened to Aharon’s sons, who were also priests.
Now Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu each took their own censer, put fire in it, laid incense over it, and offered unauthorized fire before Adonai, which He had not commanded them. So fire came out from the presence of Adonai and consumed them. So they died before Adonai. Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what Adonai spoke of, saying, ‘To those who are near Me I will show myself holy.’ Upon the faces of all the people I will be glorified.” Then Aaron kept silent.” Leviticus 10:1-3 TLV
YHVH had warned Aharon about this beforehand.
Also, when Aaron keeps the lamps lit at dusk, he must burn them. There must be incense continually before Adonai, throughout your generations. You must not offer up unauthorized incense on it. Nor should any burnt offering or grain offering be there, nor should you pour any drink offering there.” Exodus 30:8-9 TLV
So how can we know that we are authorized as intercessors (human censers) to offer holy prayers (holy incense)? Paul addresses this exact issue.
“Therefore, first of all I urge that requests, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be made on behalf of all people— for kings and all who are in authority—so we may live a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and respectfulness. This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior. He desires all men to be saved and come into the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and there is one Mediator between God and men—a human, Messiah Yeshua, who gave Himself as a ransom for all—the testimony at the proper time.” 1 Timothy 2:1-6 TLV
Yeshua is the mediator-intercessor, and we are to pray in submission to Him. The attitude of our hearts in prayer is also very important. Do we harbor pride, anger, bitterness, jealousy, strife, contention, or are we coveting someone’s position?
“So I desire all men to pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without anger and argument.” 1 Timothy 2:8 TLV
How can we pray for others to be set free if we are bound to sin in any way? The best example of this is what happened to the sons of Sceva, who tried to use Yeshua’s name and authority without being authorized.
But some traveling Jewish exorcists also tried to invoke the name of the Lord Yeshua, saying, “I charge you by the Yeshua whom Paul preaches.” Seven sons of a Jewish ruling kohen named Sceva were doing this. But the evil spirit answered them, “I know Yeshua, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” Then the man with the evil spirit sprang at them, subduing and overpowering all of them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. This became known to all who lived in Ephesus, both Jewish and Greek people. Fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Yeshua was being magnified.” Acts 19:13-17 TLV
When Absalom tried to usurp the kingdom from his father, David, he lost his life, as he was not authorized. Usurping the authority of kings or priests authorized by Yah incurs terrible judgment.
“They took Absalom and threw him into a deep pit in the forest and piled over him a very large heap of stones. Then all Israel fled, everyone to his tent. (Now Absalom, in his lifetime, had taken and set up for himself a pillar, which is in the King’s Valley, for he said, “I have no son to preserve the memory of my name.” So he called the pillar by his name, and it has been called Absalom’s Monument to this day.”) 2 Samuel 18:17-18 TLV
We need to learn both to pray and to act within our jurisdiction without coveting someone else’s position.
“For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil practice.” Jacob (James) 3:16 TLV
First, we need to repent, do Teshuva, and turn from our wicked ways, and then He will hear our prayers and authorize us to stand in the gap and pray for others and even for our nation.
“When My people, over whom My Name is called, humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their evil ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 TLV
It is only then that we are authorized and our prayers are authorized. Yah will be attentive to our prayers, and miracles will happen.
“Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place.” 2 Chronicles 7:15 TLV

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from Your presence—take not Your Ruach ha-Kodesh (Holy Spirit) from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and sustain me with a willing spirit. Then will I teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will return to You.” Psalms 51:12-15 TLV
