Torah Portion RE’EH – Devarim (Deuteronomy) 11:26-16:17 Haftarah: Isaiah 54:11-55:5
Shabbat shalom, dearly beloved.
Today we will talk about resilience, which I consider to be one of the most important character traits during these end-time, tumultuous circumstances.
What has kept the Jewish People going and bouncing back after endless rejections, persecutions, expulsions, terror attacks, war, hatred, and whatnot is RESILIENCE.
“Adonai is exalted, for He dwells on high! He has filled Zion with justice and righteousness. It will be your time of faithfulness, a wealth of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge—the fear of Adonai is His treasure.” Isaiah 33:5-6 TLV
This scripture in Hebrew mentions a word combination for faithfulness and salvation.
that says:
Hosen Yeshuot, just like the name of Yeshua!
This means:
Resilience (Hosen) and many rescues and deliverances (yeshuot). It is resilience that causes us to stay faithful, and this will be followed by deliverance. We apply wisdom and knowledge so as to walk in the fear of Yah that will propel us to be resilient and to stay faithful.
What is resilience?
Resilience is the ability to adapt, recover, and continue functioning effectively after facing difficulties, setbacks, stress, or adversity.
Depending on the context, it can mean slightly different things:
- In psychology: Resilience is the capacity to cope with challenges, recover from hardship, and maintain or regain mental well-being after difficult experiences.
- In everyday life: It means “bouncing back” from disappointments, failures, or unexpected changes while continuing to move forward.
- In engineering or materials science: Resilience is a material’s ability to absorb energy when deformed and return to its original shape without permanent damage.
- In ecology or systems: Resilience refers to the ability of an ecosystem, organization, or system to withstand disturbances and recover while maintaining its essential functions.
Example sentence:
“Despite losing her job, Maya showed resilience by learning new skills and finding a better opportunity a few months later.”
In simple terms, resilience is the ability to recover, adapt, and keep going in the face of challenges.
We can see the resilience of King David in the following scripture story.
“So David was in a serious bind, for the troops were calling for his stoning, for all the troops were bitter of soul, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in Adonai his God.” 1 Samuel 30:6 TLV
“Now it came to pass, when David and his men returned to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had made a raid on the Negev and on Ziklag and had attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire, taking the women in it captive, young and old, without killing anyone, but carried them off as they went their way. So when David and his men came to the town, behold, it was burned with fire—and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captives. Then David and the troops with him lifted up their voices and wept until they there was no more strength in them to weep. Even David’s two wives were taken captive—Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail of Carmel, Nabal’s widow.” 1 Samuel 30:1-5 TLV
What would you do in a case where everyone you love and everything you own is taken by a brutal enemy? This happens suddenly; it is unexpected, and you find out about it after a great time at work where you got a promotion. That is what happened on October 7 after the brutal Hamas attack on the kibbutzim of the Gaza envelope.
What a shock, what a trauma if it were to happen to you. You could be in panic mode; confusion sets in. You are heartbroken. And in the midst of it your best co-workers and friends blame you like they blamed David. You are the chief, the manager, and the star of your company; it’s all your fault. They are in panic and heartbroken, as they lost everything too, and they want to kill you.
David was in a serious bind. He could have:
- Get angry and blame Yah.
- Go into apathy, denial, and depression.
- Quit and kill himself
But instead He chose
- To encourage himself in YHVH
- To ask for His guidance
- To follow His guidance with determination
- To recover all
“So David was in a serious bind, for the troops were calling for his stoning, for all the troops were bitter of soul, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in Adonai his God. Then David said to Abiathar the kohen, son of Ahimelech, “Please bring me the ephod.” So Abiathar brought the ephod to David. David inquired of Adonai, saying, “Should I pursue after this raiding band? Shall I overtake them?” He answered him, “Pursue! For you will surely overtake, and you will surely rescue!” So David went, he and the 600 men with him, and came to the Wadi Besor, where those left behind remained—” 1 Samuel 30:6-9 TLV
After October 7, Israel could have done all of the above. The hostages could have done all of the above, but instead they decided to trust Yah and give it their best fight. Most of them were released alive and had profound faith testimonies of encounters with Elohim and their own Covenant Jewish Identity. This is summed up in this verse:
“Therefore submit to God. But resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Jacob (James) 4:7 TLV
And in this one:
“Now the God of Shalom will soon crush Satan under your feet. May the grace of our Lord Yeshua be with you.” Romans 16:20 TLV
Resilience is a result of a heavenly recipe applied to your character, attitudes, and reactions.
Trust
“Trust in Adonai with all your heart; lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 TLV
Fear of Yah
“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear Adonai and turn away from evil.” Proverbs 3:7 TLV
Faith
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of realities not seen. Now without faith it is impossible to please God. For the one who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. And what more shall I say? For time would fail me if I told of Gideon, Barak, Samson, and Jephthah, and also of David and Samuel and the prophets. By faith they conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, and made foreign armies flee. Women received their dead raised back to life, and others were tortured after not accepting release so they might obtain a better resurrection. Others experienced the trial of mocking and scourging—yes, and even chains and prison. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, and they were murdered with the sword. They went around in sheepskins and goatskins; they were destitute, afflicted, and mistreated. The world was not worthy of them! They wandered around in deserts and mountains, caves and holes in the ground. And all these, though commended for their faith, did not receive what was promised—because God had provided something better for us, so that only with us would they reach perfection.” Hebrews 11:1, 6, 32-40 TLV
“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Messiah.” Romans 10:17 TLV
Boldness and courage
“Chazak! Be courageous! Do not be afraid or tremble before them. For Adonai your God—He is the One who goes with you. He will not fail you or abandon you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 TLV
Definition of courage:
Courage is the ability to act rightly in the face of fear, danger, pain, uncertainty, or adversity. It is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to do what is right or necessary despite feeling afraid.
Different contexts emphasize different aspects:
- Personal: Facing fears, taking risks, or enduring hardship with determination.
- Moral: Standing up for what is right, even when it is unpopular or comes at a personal cost.
- Physical: Confronting physical danger or hardship with bravery.
- Spiritual: Remaining faithful to God and obedient to His calling despite opposition, suffering, or persecution.
Example sentence:
She showed great courage by speaking the truth, even though she knew it might cost her friends.
Synonyms: bravery, boldness, valor, fortitude, fearlessness (though fearlessness implies no fear, while courage often involves acting despite fear), and steadfastness.
From a biblical perspective, courage is closely linked with trusting God. For example:
“Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or dismayed, for Adonai your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
In simple terms, courage is choosing to do what is right despite fear because you trust God more than your circumstances.
David’s courageous determination, born of resilient faith and trust, caused him to recover ALL.
David attacked them from the twilight until the evening of the next day. None of them escaped, except 400 young men who rode on camels and fled. So David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken and rescued his two wives. There was nothing of theirs missing, whether young or old, sons or daughters, spoils or anything else that had been carried off; David recovered everything. David took all the flocks and the herd that they had driven ahead of the other cattle, so they said, “This is David’s spoil.” 1 Samuel 30:17-20 TLV
And on top of it, he came out with spoil.
“Now if you listen obediently to the voice of Adonai your God, taking care to do all His mitzvot that I am commanding you today, Adonai your God will set you on high—above all the nations of the earth. Then all these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you listen to the voice of Adonai your God: “Adonai will cause your enemies who rise up against you to be struck down before you. They will come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.” Deuteronomy 28:1-2, 7 TLV
Resilience will always cause us to come out on top. Every adverse circumstance becomes a stepping stone if we choose to be resilient rather than quitters.
The heavenly recipe for a character of resilience:
- Trust to encourage yourself in Yah
- Fear of Yah to seek His guidance
- Faith to believe He will be with you
- Praise and thanks in all circumstances
- Courage to obey His guidance
Outcome: Coming out on top after every challenge, difficulty or setback.
- Victorious outcome
- More resilience
- More territory
“Now we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 TLV
With resilience every setback becomes a stepping stone! Setbacks make a faithful, resilient person stronger when they choose the steps David took.
“Passing through the valley of Baca (weeping), they make it a spring. The early rain covers it with blessings. They go from strength to strength—everyone of them appears before God in Zion.” Psalms 84:7-8 TLV
