Torah Portion SIMCHAT TORAH– Devarim (Deuteronomy) 33:1-34:12 Haftarah: Joshua 1:1-8
“Moreover, I will give you a new heart. I will put a new spirit within you. I will remove the stony heart from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:26 TLV
Shabbat shalom, dearly beloved,
As I was praying early one morning, overlooking Jerusalem and especially the Knesset, it dawned on me that Israel was going through a heart circumcision. I began to pray to separate the foreskin of the heart all over the nation. All Jewish baby boys go through circumcision on the 8th day of their birth, as prescribed to Abraham.
“Also your eight-day-olds must be circumcised, every male, throughout your generations, including a house-born slave or a slave bought with money from any foreigner who is not of your seed.” Genesis 17:12 TLV
When that happens, it’s a big party, though there is pain involved in the cutting of the foreskin of the male organ and the shedding of blood. The Mohel (the trained rabbi who performs the sacred ceremony) gives the baby a drop of wine. That drop of kiddush sweet wine is enough to numb the pain of this micro-surgery. There are prayers, praises, celebrations, wonderful food, and, in general, a festive, emotional atmosphere. The baby usually cries a little at the moment of the precise incision, but it doesn’t last too long, as it’s immediately bandaged with an antiseptic pain-numbing salve. The mother then takes the baby to comfort him (and herself) and to nurse him. Normally, the circumcision site takes about 3-7 days to heal.
You could say that a Jew enters this world to experience pain immediately. But, interestingly, it is this Covenant Act that will protect that baby once he becomes a man from venereal diseases. It will also protect their wives.
Medical studies show that.
For heterosexual men, the strongest evidence shows that circumcision reduces acquisition of HIV by roughly 50–60%, and it also reduces high-risk HPV and genital herpes (HSV-2). The CDC specifically recognizes these benefits. (CDC)
There is also evidence of a protective benefit for wives/female partners, particularly for infections related to HPV. Randomized trials found that women whose husbands/partners were circumcised had about a 28% lower rate of high-risk HPV, as well as lower rates of trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, and genital ulcer disease. Because persistent high-risk HPV is the major cause of cervical cancer, reduced HPV transmission can also translate into lower cervical cancer risk. (NCBI, PMC)
One large international study found penile HPV in 5.5% of circumcised men versus 19.6% of uncircumcised men. Among certain monogamous women whose male partners had multiple previous partners, having a circumcised partner was associated with substantially lower cervical cancer risk. (New England Journal of Medicine)
It is good to know that the God of Israel never inflicts pain without it bringing a much higher profit. And the same happens in the case of “heart circumcision,” which is what Yah desires for all His people.
“ADONAI, your God will bring you into the land that your fathers possessed, and you will possess it; and He will do you good and multiply you more than your fathers. Also ADONAI, your God, will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants—to love ADONAI, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul, in order that you may live.” Deuteronomy 30:5-6 TLV
First, He brings us back to the Land of Israel, and then He circumcises our hearts. He is the one who does both things by His Sovereign Will.
“For I will take you from the nations, gather you out of all the countries, and bring you back to your own land. Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean from all your uncleanness and from all your idols. Moreover, I will give you a new heart. I will put a new spirit within you. I will remove the stony heart from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” Ezekiel 36:24-26 TLV
This will happen, and it is happening by His Sovereign will. After the State of Israel celebrated 70 years and until Messiah Yeshua returned, He started to hasten the process of heart circumcision. In the days to come, more Jews will return to the Land, and the heart circumcision will proceed by the will of Yah. Let us remember that there is pain involved and the shedding of blood, but the profit surpasses the pain.
“All your lovers have forgotten you. They are not looking for you. For I wounded you as an enemy—with cruel punishment—because your iniquity is vast, your sins innumerable. For I will restore health to you and will heal you of your wounds.” It is a declaration of ADONAI. “For they called you an outcast: ‘Zion—no one cares about her.’”” Jeremiah 30:14, 17 TLV
Yah wounds and Yah heals, but the nations that were used to bring Israel to desperation and repentance to cry out to their God. Those nations will be punished.
“Yet all who devour you will be devoured, and all your foes—all of them— will go into captivity. Those plundering you will be plundered, and all preying on you I give as prey.” Jeremiah 30:16 TLV
In fact, the nations are called to bring joy to the Jewish People during their time of distress.
Make His people rejoice, O nations, for He will avenge the blood of His servants. He will return vengeance on His foes, and atone for the land of His people.” Then Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people—he and Joshua son of Nun.” Deuteronomy 32:43-44 TLV
These are the last words of Moses before Elohim took him. And the last words are the legacy, the bottom line. The nations that have come against Israel will be judged terribly, and the nations that will bring joy to Israel after their many sufferings will obtain favor.
Just like during the Brit Mila (Covenant of Circumcision) party, there is a celebration in Heaven and should be on earth among those called to be Sheep Nations. His Jewish People are about to be revealed as the Sons of Elohim. And all creation is eagerly waiting for it.
“For I consider the sufferings of this present time not worthy to be compared with the coming glory to be revealed to us. For the creation eagerly awaits the revelation of the sons of God.” Romans 8:18-19 TLV
Those from the nations who obey the call to make His People rejoice, and who are grafted into the Olive Tree of Israel, will be unveiled and revealed with them.
“and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy. As it is written, “For this reason I will give You praise among the Gentiles, and I will sing to Your name.” And again it says, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people.” And again, “Praise ADONAI all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise Him.” Romans 15:9-11 TLV
Nations play an important role in Israel’s healing as a nation. Though Israel is the Mother of the Nations, it’s going through heart circumcision as a newborn baby. The Gentiles who believe in the Jewish Messiah are to nurse this emerging, born-again nation to health.
Thus says ADONAI Elohim: “Look, I will lift My hand to the nations, and raise My banner to the peoples! They will bring your sons on their chests and carry your daughters on their shoulders. Kings will be your guardians, their princesses your nurses. They will bow down to you with their faces to the ground and lick the dust of your feet. Then you will know that I am ADONAI—those hoping in Me will not be ashamed.” Isaiah 49:22-23 TLV
