Torah Portion PINCHAS – Bamidbar (Numbers) 25:10-30:1 Haftarah: Jeremiah 1:1-2:3
So they girded sackcloth on their loins, put ropes on their heads, came to the king of Israel, and said, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says, ‘Please let me live.’” He replied, “Is he still alive? He is my brother. “1 Kings 20:32 TLV
Shabbat Shalom, dearly beloved.
Lately, I have been hearing in my spirit this special story that transpired between Ahab, the king of Israel, and Ben-Hadad, the king of the Arameans. The Arameans were in the areas of Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan today.
Ben-Hadad, the Aramean king, had tried to obliterate Israel, but YHVH gave Ahab the victory against all odds.
Now the children of Israel were mustered, given provisions, and marched against them. But when the children of Israel encamped before them, they looked like two little flocks of goats while the Arameans covered the land. 1 Kings 20:27 TLV
The victory was so massive that little Israel managed to kill 100,000 Arameans in one day!
So they encamped one over against the other for seven days. On the seventh day the battle was joined, and the children of Israel struck down 100,000 of the Aramean foot soldiers in a single day. 1 Kings 20:29 TLV
However, the king escaped and hid with great fear of the king of Israel. In the same way, the new leader of Iran, Haminai Mujtaba, the son of the dead Ayatollah, has been hiding for fear of the Israel-USA alliance against Iran and the Shin Bet.
The rest fled to Aphek, into the city, and the wall fell upon 27,000 men that were left. But Ben-Hadad fled into the city, into an inner chamber. 1 Kings 20:30 TLV
However, he had some astute advisors who gave him great counsel. Make a deal with the king of Israel like, make a deal with President Trump; he is a nice and merciful guy, he loves deals, he will let you live. He will let your evil, brutal regime continue.
His officials said to him, “Look now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let’s put sackcloth on our loins and ropes on our heads and surrender to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life.” 1 Kings 20:31 TLV
And so they went to meet the king who had destroyed all their army. The one that YHVH had given a smashing victory to against all odds.
So they girded sackcloth on their loins, put ropes on their heads, came to the king of Israel and said, “Your servant Ben-Hadad says: ‘Please let me live.’” He replied, “Is he still alive? He is my brother.” 1 Kings 20:32 TLV
Now, this Ben-Hadad was so wicked and brutal and had tried to spoil the king from his wives and sons and treasures before the war that defeated him.
Then the messengers came back and said, “Thus says Ben-Hadad: Indeed, I sent word to you, ordering you to give me your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children. Now I will send my servants to you tomorrow at this time, and they shall search your palace and the houses of your courtiers. Whatever is valuable in your eyes, they shall seize in their hand and take it away.” 1 Kings 20:5-6 TLV
And after YHVH gave Israel this awesome victory, Ahab was calling this same Ben-Hadad his brother. In a very similar way that President Trump has called wicked Islamic leaders nice and reasonable:
Iran’s emerging negotiators from the same brutal regime: “reasonable,” “rational,” “different people”
Ahmad al-Sharaa (Syria): “nice guy,” “tough guy,” “strong past”
Kim Jong Un (North Korea): “very good relationship,” open to renewed diplomacy
Good relationships with “reasonable, nice guys” who are mass murderers with no scruples are a serious mistake. They use torture and rape regularly against their own people, minorities, the infidels, and their opponents. Making a covenant with them is a covenant with death.
Then he said to him (to Ben-Hadad), “The cities which my father took from your father I will give back, and you may set up markets for yourself in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.” “Then I will let you go with this covenant.” So he made a covenant with him and let him go. 1 Kings 20:34 TLV
Each one of these brutal terrorist leaders of regimes is a modern-day Ben Hadad. Making deals with them does not sit well with the Living God of Israel. The Iranian regime should have been toppled, not allowed to survive and be restored through “a deal.”
Just like with Ben-Hadad then, He is saying today:
Then he said to him, “Thus says Adonai: ‘Because you have released out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life will be in place of his life and your people in place of his people.’” Then the king of Israel went home to Samaria sullen and resentful.” 1 Kings 20:42-43 TLV
The end of the story is that the entire House of Israel (Northern Kingdom) eventually fell into the hands of Assyria, which succeeded Aram and was cut off from the covenant.
So Adonai became very angry with Israel and banished them from His presence. There was none left but the tribe of Judah alone. 2 Kings 17:18 TLV
Those evil alliances are dangerous, and a wicked Iranian regime continues to be the same wicked Iranian regime today as before the war. Albeit it now has the backing of the whole world that calls the Ayatollah of Iran “my brother,” lavishing kisses and handshakes on the Iranian delegation.
“So now, O kings, be wise, take warning, O judges of the earth! Serve Adonai with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He become angry, and you perish along your way since His wrath may flare up suddenly. Happy is everyone taking refuge in Him!” Psalms 2:10-12 TLV
We pray for great mercy over the poor Iranian people who believed when Trump said, “Help is on the way.” Not in their worst nightmares did they imagine “a deal” that would leave their brutal regime in place. Maybe now that Israel is alone with Her God, He may send Israel to their rescue. We will wait, pray, and see.
“May Adonai answer you in the day of trouble! May the Name of the God of Jacob set you up securely on high. May He send you help from the Sanctuary and support you from Zion.” Psalms 20:2-3 TLV
