Torah Portion MATTOT-MASSEI – Bamidbar (Numbers) 30:2-36:13 Haftarah: Isaiah 66:1-24
“From the sons of Issachar—men who know how to interpret the signs of the times to determine what Israel should do—200 chiefs with all their kinsmen under their command;” 1 Chronicles 12:33 TLV
Shabbat shalom, dearly beloved!
As we see the recount of the warriors of the tribes that came to crown David as King of Israel, we miss a very important tribe. The tribe of Issachar in Hebrew is Ish-Sachar. This means the one who receives his dues or his wages. This was a very profitable tribe. They benefited all of Israel by knowing the times and what Israel should do. A fact that is easily missed is that only 200 of their chiefs are mentioned as coming to Hebron to turn over the kingdom to David; as for those under their command, their numbers are not known. Each of the other tribes came in the thousands. Let us see two examples below from Judah and Ephraim:
“The sons of Judah that bore shield and spear were 6,800, armed for war; from the sons of Ephraim 20,800 valiant warriors, famous men in their clan;” 1 Chronicles 12:25, 31 TLV.
And let us see Issachar with the smallest number:
“From the sons of Issachar—men who know how to interpret the signs of the times to determine what Israel should do—200 chiefs with all their kinsmen under their command;” 1 Chronicles 12:33 TLV
This is not an insignificant detail, nor does the small number of chiefs make this tribe insignificant. Rather, the intriguing small number makes it valuable and important. In fact, these chiefs were mighty warriors and had many under their command, but their numbers are not mentioned; only the chiefs are. In the other tribes, the chiefs are not mentioned, only the famous warriors, and they were in the thousands. The chiefs of Issachar are not mentioned as popular warriors or numerous, but they were divinely appointed to give direction, to tell Israel what to do.
“Counsel and sound wisdom are mine. I have understanding and power. By me, kings reign and princes decree justice.” Proverbs 8:14-15 TLV
All the other tribes had various attributes that were important to rule the kingdom. But only one tribe had the discernment to know what to do and when to do it. Timing is everything, and without proper direction, a ship goes off its course and a plane gets lost.
The tribe of Issachar was the GPS of Israel.
Their appearance was what gave Israel the stamp of approval for the maneuver of turning the kingdom over to David. Had they not shown up, nothing would have been blessed, and the thousands of followers would have all gone astray. Their appearance assured and ensured that the move was on course.
“Wisdom makes a wise man stronger than ten rulers in a city.” Ecclesiastes 7:19 TLV
Neither might nor wisdom is in the numbers, but in the calling and the quality of the leaders. If the leaders have the direction and the timing right, they will lead well. If not, the ministry will go astray. Timing and direction are given to the discerning Issachar-like leaders who fear Yah and seek popularity with Him; then they know His secrets.
“And He said to mankind, ‘The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’” Job 28:28 TLV
People get excited when they have thousands of followers. I get excited when the chiefs of Issachar show up. Good things at the wrong time could cause trouble. For everything, there is a time.
“You go on up to the Feast. I’m not going to this feast, because My time hasn’t yet fully come.” John 7:8 TLV
Yeshua showed us not to be pressurized by the masses but to be fully led by the Ruach to be on the exact time His father appointed. He warns us not to do anything out of time. We need Issachar with us, then our efforts will bring forth full wages. Then what we will do will profit us as well as many others.
“Therefore, Yeshua said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always at hand.” John 7:6 TLV
Under the Issachar anointing, we will sniff change before it comes. Our ears will be open to the whisper of the Ruach. Our heart and mind will be in readiness to change course. In this case, the kingdom was being turned over from Saul to David, and the chiefs of Issachar, the GPS of Israel, came to confirm it. Their strength was not in the numbers but in the knowledge, the discernment, and the direction. Without them, no human effort would succeed. No numbers would compensate for the indispensable Issachar anointing.
“So give Your servant a mind of understanding to judge Your people, to discern between good and evil—for who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” Now it was pleasing in the eyes of Adonai that Solomon requested this thing.” 1 Kings 3:9-10 TLV
When we want wisdom and discernment, we can please YHVH. This is very profitable! It is an Issachar-Ish-Sachar desire.
“So God said to him, ‘Because you asked for this thing—and have not asked for yourself long life, nor asked for yourself riches, nor asked for the life of your enemies, but asked for yourself understanding to discern justice— behold, I have done according to your words. I have given you a wise and discerning mind so that there has been none like you before you, nor shall anyone like you arise after you. Moreover, I have also given you what you did not request—both riches and honor—so that no one among the kings will be like you all your days.” 1 Kings 3:11-13 TLV
A GPS to the Nations
United Nations for Israel is an Issachar Movement. It is a prophetic GPS to the nations. Our strength is not in the numbers but in our leaders who have an understanding of the times and know what Israel and the body of believers in Messiah should do. They have been schooled in the GRM Israeli Bible Institute to discern truth from lies.
“The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him. You know Him, because He abides with you and will be in you.” John 14:17 TLV
Like Yochanan the Immerser (John the Baptist), we have been a voice crying in the wilderness: prepare the way of YHVH. Remove Replacement Theology in full from all church curricula. Return to the Gospel made in Zion; bless, defend, and comfort the Jewish People. Stand with Israel like Ruth stood with Naomi through thick and thin, which brought full wages to her. Ruth was an Issachar-like woman.
“Then she fell upon her face, bowing to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found favor in your eyes that you have noticed me, even though I am a foreigner?” Boaz replied and said to her, “All that you have done for your mother-in-law since your husband’s death has been fully reported to me—how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and came to a people you did not know before. May Adonai repay you for what you have done, and may you be fully rewarded (receive full wages) by Adonai, God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”” Ruth 2:10-12 TLV
In Hebrew, it says: May you receive full wages,” and the word “Sachar,” like in “Ish-Sachar” (Issachar), is mentioned. Ruth knew after she was widowed that it was time to leave the familiar ways of her faith and people and to follow Naomi. It was time to leave the curse of Moab and move on to the Promised Land. She knew that submission in faithful service to her mother in Torah (law) was the only way out of the curse that she, as a Moabite, inherited for not helping Israel in the desert.
“No Ammonite or Moabite is to enter the community of Adonai—even to the tenth generation, none belonging to them is to enter the community of Adonai forever—because they did not meet you with bread and water on the way when you came out from Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam son of Beor from Petor of Aram-naharaim to curse you.” Deuteronomy 23:4-5 TLV
She understood what to do in order to use the most powerful Key of Abraham to overturn her Moabite curse into a blessing. The secret was to join, serve, honor, and learn from the Jewish People and from their God and their Torah.
“Ruth replied, “Do not plead with me to abandon you, to turn back from following you. For where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May Adonai deal with me, and worse, if anything but death comes between me and you!” Ruth 1:16-17 TLV
With an Issachar-like wisdom, she activated the most potent key to turn curses into blessings: The Key of Abraham.
I will bow down My knee to bless, favor, do good, and exalt those who bow down their knee to bless, favor, do good, and exalt You (Israel). And I will decree a curse of misfortune and total destruction to those who dishonor and disrespect you by taking you lightly. And in (unity) with you (Israel), all the families of the earth will be blessed. Genesis 12:3 STB
Those who, like Issachar, will discern the evil times, full of hatred and hateful acts against the Jews and Israel (like before WW2), will know what to do. They will apply the Key of Abraham (Genesis 12:3) to their lives, ministries, cities, and nations and make restitution towards Israel. This will overturn potent curses, bring forth the glory, and, with it, the harvest of the nations.
A voice cries out in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of Adonai; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley will be lifted up, every mountain and hill made low, the rough ground will be a plain, and the rugged terrain smooth. The glory of Adonai will be revealed, and all flesh will see it together.” For the mouth of Adonai has spoken.” Isaiah 40:3-5 TLV
Then the numbers of the end-time harvest of the nations will come under the command of the Issachar-like leaders, and we will all be on course.
Applying the Key of Abraham is not only about mechanically blessing Israel but rather honoring her as the Mother of the Nations, as the source of our faith and the Gospel. Yes, we will bless her, and we will also learn from her, from her Torah, and from the rich root of the Olive Tree that the whole ecclesia (church) must be grafted into.
“It will come to pass in the last days that the mountain of Adonai’s House will stand firm as head of the mountains and will be exalted above the hills. So all nations will flow to it. Then many people will go and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of Adonai, to the House of the God of Jacob! Then He will teach us His ways, and we will walk in His paths.” For Torah will go forth from Zion and the word of Adonai from Jerusalem.” Isaiah 2:2-3 TLV
The Issachar among us knows that we are in the last days, and the prophecy above has been unfolding before our eyes. Even the enemies of Israel are beginning to see that her God reigns.
“For behold, darkness covers the earth, and deep darkness the peoples. But Adonai will arise upon you, and His glory will appear over you.” Isaiah 60:2 TLV
Some of them will even turn and follow her.
“Nations will come to your light, kings to the brilliance of your rising.” Isaiah 60:3 TLV
A prayer:
Abba, help me to listen to Your Ruach and to those who have been given the discernment and anointing of Issachar to know what to do and when to do it. Help me not to get enamored with numbers and with popularity, but rather to covet Your timely discernment. In Yeshua’s name. Amen.
