A Watchman Warning
Torah Portion SHOFTIM – Devarim (Deuteronomy) 16:18-21:9 Haftarah: Isaiah 51:12-52:12
“Solomon’s horses were brought from Egypt and from Keveh. The king’s merchants would buy them from Keveh at a price They imported a chariot from Egypt for 600 shekels of silver, and a horse for 150; and in turn they were exported to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Aram.” 1 Kings 10:28-29 TLV
Shabbat shalom, dearly beloved,
Often when I read the scriptures again and again, I find verses that I had never paid attention to before. Such is the case with the verse above about the trading pattern of King Solomon, the wealthiest and wisest king who ever lived. His merchants used to buy chariots and horses from Egypt, import them into Israel, and then export them to other kings like the Hittites and the Arameans. It sounds like a fairly savvy business practice that created more wealth for King Solomon and his kingdom, except for the identity of those kings. Let us start with the Hittites:
“On that day, Adonai cut a covenant with Abram, saying, “I give this land to your seed, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates River: the Kenite, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Raphaites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”” Genesis 15:18-21 TLV
We understand that YHVH gave the land of the Hittites to His people, Israel. What were they supposed to do with them?
“For My angel will go before you and bring you to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and the Jebusites, and I will cut them off. You are not to bow down to their gods or serve them or do what they do. Rather, you are to utterly overthrow them, and break their pillars in pieces.” Exodus 23:23-24 TLV
However, Israel did not obey this command, and instead of defeating the Hittites, the Hittites defeated Israel through compromise and intermarriage.
“But Bnei-Yisrael settled among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, and took their daughters for themselves as wives, gave their own daughters to their sons, and worshipped their gods. Bnei-Yisrael did what was evil in Adonai’s eyes, forgot Adonai their God, and worshipped the Baalim and the Asherahs.” Judges 3:5-7 TLV
Then we find King Solomon trading with them, and not any kind of trading, but arming them with horses and chariots. This, in turn, could boomerang against Israel.
He also traded with the Arameans.
They imported a chariot from Egypt for 600 shekels of silver and a horse for 150, and in turn they were exported to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Aram.” 1 Kings 10:29 TLV
Aram was not Canaan, and the Israelites were not commanded to destroy them. In fact, Abraham was an Aramean as well as Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah. All 12 sons of Yaakov were born in Aram in the house of Yaakov’s brother-in-law Laban. Yet YHVH had told Abraham to leave that place of pagan worship and to settle in Canaan. Later on, the God of Israel would bring in the Israelites from Egypt and settle them in that land. His purpose was to clear up the land of idol and fallen angel worship. They needed to remove, overthrow, and destroy all the Canaanites to make a clearing for the God of Israel to be worshipped solely. Instead, they left them alive and intermarried. That was Israel’s downfall and surely Solomon’s downfall.
“Now King Solomon loved so many foreign women, besides the daughter of Pharaoh—Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites—from the nations of whom Adonai had said to the children of Israel, “You shall not associate with them nor they associate with you, for surely they would turn your heart away after their gods.” Solomon clung to them for love.” 1 Kings 11:1-2 TLV
And what about the Arameans that King Solomon’s merchants traded with, arming them with chariots and horses from Egypt?
“Now the king of Aram was warring against Israel. He consulted with his officers, saying, “In such and such a place will be my camp.” 2 Kings 6:8 TLV
The Arameans were the ones who constantly attacked Israel, using the chariots and the horses acquired from King Solomon’s merchants. The Arameans would, after a while, become the Assyrians who decimated, defeated, and scattered the 10 northern Israelite tribes.
“Therefore I gave her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, whom she lusted after.” Ezekiel 23:9 TLV
It seems that this story of trading and forming alliances with our enemies has repeated itself. Israel armed Hamas in Gaza when Hamas looked more like a political organization. Arming them was so that they could rule over their people and keep the peace in Gaza. Israel also armed and trained the Palestinian Authority police in the hope that they would rule over their people. Then October 7th happened in 2023. Those we armed and supported turned around to butcher us. It was not sudden. This built up over time with one compromise after the other.
YHVH had told Israel that He would help them possess the Land of Promise little by little, with patience, steadfastness, and perseverance.
“Adonai, your God, will drive away those nations before you little by little—you will not be able to put an end to them all at once, or else the beasts of the field will multiply on you.” Deuteronomy 7:22 TLV
Instead of that, they chose instant gratification, peace at all costs with their enemies, intermarriage, and compromise, and they ended up defeated. It is the enemy that implemented the “little by little” strategy and ended up defeating Israel in the past, as today. When we want things fast, when we compromise little by little, we end up defeated. Hamas has been using this principle from the beginning, little by little keeping on wearing down Israel, starving the hostages, lying in the media, stalling negotiations, and so on.
This is a Watchman Warning to all those who aspire for PEACE NOW and quick peace treaties. For the USA, which has been arming Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt with billions of dollars’ worth of the latest weapons, the Middle East mentality of conquering through trade and intermarriage, and false alliances is an age-old strategy. There is an Arab word that describes this style of conquering and invasion: SABER, which means “advance slowly with patience and conquer.” You can see this as nation after nation in Europe and all the way to Australia has succumbed to Islamic influence and terror; to name a few: the UK, France, Canada, and Australia. Even large parts of the USA have been slowly but surely coming under Islamic and Shariah law and influence. You can see many mosques being erected in many places all over. The Western society’s downfall is the desire for instant gratification, self-indulgence, and happiness. The Middle Eastern society’s strength is SABER, little by little, steadfast, and long-suffering. They are undoubtedly winning. They are using godly principles for evil world conquest agendas. When will the West wake up?
Has Israel, which espouses Western values, really awakened after October 7, 2023? Or do we need to return to the God of Israel and His principles of patience and long-suffering to achieve our goals, not to mention the simple truth: stop trading with the enemy, arming their forces, and making compromised alliances.
The same would apply to you and me in our walk with Yeshua. Stop trading with the enemy through small and big compromises and destructive relationships. He is calling us back to His eternal principles of wisdom, faithfulness, and patience.
“The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some consider slowness. Rather, He is being patient toward you—not wanting anyone to perish, but for all to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 TLV.
Notice that Elohim is patient. He does not judge immediately. He allows for plenty of time to pass. He is calling us to return to Him and to His ways, both personally and nationally. But if we do not, suddenly judgment falls. He did not judge Solomon immediately for his compromises in trade and marriage. However, His kingdom was divided at the time of his son Rehoboam. The United Kingdom of Israel ceased to exist. Judgment does not always come when we expect it, but rather when we do not. Compromises happen little by little, and so do Yah’s reprimands and His calling for us to return to His ways, both personally and nationally. But if we keep on turning a deaf ear, sudden judgment will happen—just like October 7.
“When they are saying, ‘Shalom and safety,’ sudden destruction comes upon them like a woman having birth pains in the womb—there is no way they will escape.” 1 Thessalonians 5:3 TLV
