77th Anniversary of Israel
Portion de Torah ACHAREI MOT-KEDOSHIM – Vayikra (Lévitique) 16:1-20:27 Haftarah: Amos 9, 7-15
“For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her righteousness shines out brightly, and her salvation as a blazing torch.” Isaiah 62:1 TLV
Shabbat shalom, dearly beloved!
Since 2020, Israel has been on a rollercoaster of adversity and hostility, from the start of COVID-19, when Israel became the most vaccinated nation in the world, until the recent giant terrorist fires that burned the land and tried to burn the people down; from the monstrous events of October 7, 2023, by Hamas, to the seemingly unending Iron Swords War against Hamas in Gaza, and the Northern Arrows War against Hezbollah in Lebanon; passing through the heartbreaking challenge of our hostages in Gaza, the two attacks from Iran that saw 300 ballistic missiles fall on Israel, plus many other drones and missiles; and, the almost daily sirens because of rockets from the Houthis in Yemen that send millions to the shelter to this day.
Still impacted by the ravages of evacuations from the south and the north, and the destruction of many houses and farms due to thousands of rockets by Hezbollah and Hamas, Israelis are trying to live, breathe, and restore their lives.
“A Song of Ascents. Of David. “Had Adonai not been on our side” —let Israel now say— “Had Adonai not been on our side, when men rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us alive, when their wrath burned against us.” Psalms 124:1-3 TLV
Add to this the constant barrage of antisemitism and anti-Zionism in the media, the UN, and the ICC. Reservists are being drafted again and again, leaving wives and children behind to fend for themselves, and forfeiting their workplaces, studies, and businesses. On top of it is the heartbrokenness of many bereaved families and the challenge to rehabilitate about 12,000 wounded soldiers, not to mention the PTSD that millions are suffering because of being awakened in the middle of the night or in the early morning hours to run to the shelters in their pajamas.
My daughter, for example, is still afraid to go into the shower when she is alone in the house, just in case another siren sends her running to take shelter. And like her, most of us are in a state of readiness for yet another alarm, another tragedy, another catastrophe.
Above all these difficulties is the hatred coming from left-wing activists against the PM, the conservatives, and the religious Jews. It is not enough that we still have 59 hostages in Gaza, living and dead. They use the whole hostage situation as a political card to bring unrest, strife, and violence into the nation. They set tires on fire, block main roads, are rebellious, and do not respect the police. They call for the murder of Netanyahu. They harassed his son Yair and his fiancée during their engagement ceremony. They are calling for surrender, demoralizing the people, and trying to demoralize the troops in the IDF. They even call for insurrection, anarchy, and rebellion against all elected authorities. They are a minority, but they have too many Israelis deceived by their narrative. The hatred is running high from their side. They have been funded by USAID and maybe even Iran, which is known to fight Israel from within.
“Had Adonai not been on our side, when men rose up against us, Then the waters would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over our soul,” Psalms 124:2, 4 TLV
This is yet another front in an 8-front-war. And how many more fronts will be added? Can Israel stand on its own? Can it prevail on its own? Of course not, unless Yah had been with her, long ago, Israel would have ceased to exist. Israel is a sign and a wonder of survival and even of blooming in the midst of relentless adversity. But God uses people to fulfill His purposes. For example, in the recent terror fires during Memorial Day and 77 Independence Day, He used very brave firefighters. He even used a few nations that came here with big firefighting planes to extinguish the fire, among them Cyprus, Croatia, and Italy.
“Blessed be Adonai, who has not given us as prey for their teeth.” Psalms 124:6 TLV
Now, He is calling you to come and put your feet in this land, to help, to pray, to worship, to comfort. To stand with Israel when she is weary and cannot stand for herself. Will you answer? Will you be part of demonstrating the God of Wonders in His Land and to His People? Will you come to refresh His weary inheritance with His Presence inside you? This is the time to come to Israel and be present at the time of her distress. History will record it; Yah’s Holy Angels will record your name when taking roll call: Present or absent.
Were you present in person when Israel needed you the most? Were you present with your prayers and your finances?
Will you join us during Sukkot for our God of Wonders rescue mission to Israel tour?
And if you can’t come, are you willing to support it with your prayers and finances so others can make it and so we can practically help with Boots on the Ground, to comfort and encourage, to plant more fruit trees, to feed the needy, and to help the soldiers?
I hope your resounding answer will be YES!
“For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ “Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You? Or thirsty and give You something to drink? And when did we see You a stranger and invite You in? Or naked and clothe You? When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ “And answering, the King will say to them, ‘Amen, I tell you, whatever you did to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” Matthew 25:35-40 TLV
