Torah Portion MATOT-MASEI – Bamidbar (Numbers) 30:2-36:13 Haftarah: Jeremiah 2:4-28
“Bless Adonai, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” Psalms 103:2 TLV
Shabbat Shalom, dearly beloved!
The prophets describe many blessings that come to the nations when they come to Zion, worship the God of Israel, and walk in His ways. In this Shabbat letter, we will review all of these benefits. Is it a “good deal” to pay the price to travel to Israel and to bless the people and the land?
The word “benefit” means an advantage, blessing, profit, gain, or something good that is received from a person, action, relationship, or situation.
Dictionary Meaning
Benefit (noun):
- Something that promotes well-being.
- A helpful or favorable result.
- An advantage or blessing received.
Biblical Synonyms
In Scripture, the idea of “benefits” can include:
- Blessings
- Favor
- Prosperity
- Healing
- Protection
- Salvation
- Peace
- Mercy
What are the benefits of the nations coming to Zion? This includes going up to the Land of Israel physically as well as the spiritual restoration of the Jewish Roots of the Gospel.
1. They Receive God’s Instruction and Guidance
It will come to pass in the last days that the mountain of Adonai’s House will stand firm as head of the mountains and will be exalted above the hills. So all nations will flow to it. Then many peoples will go and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of Adonai, to the House of the God of Jacob! Then He will teach us His ways, and we will walk in His paths.” For Torah will go forth from Zion and the word of Adonai from Jerusalem. Isaiah 2:2–3 (TLV)
Benefit: The nations receive divine wisdom, truth, and direction.
2. They Experience Peace Instead of War
He will judge between the nations and decide for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning knives. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, nor will they learn war anymore. Isaiah 2:4
Benefit: International peace and security.
3. They Receive Healing
Speaking of the river flowing from the Temple in Jerusalem:
“On the river, on its bank, on this side and that side, will grow every kind of tree for food. Its leaf will not wither; its fruit will not fail; it will bear new fruit every month because its water flows out from the Sanctuary. Its fruit will be for food and its leaf will be for healing.” Ezekiel 47:12
Benefit: Healing flows from God’s presence in Zion.
4. They Receive Rain and Agricultural Blessings
Then all the survivors from all the nations that attacked Jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the King, Adonai-Tzva’ot, and to celebrate Sukkot. Furthermore, if any of the nations on earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, Adonai-Tzva’ot, they will have no rain. Zechariah 14:16–17
Benefit: Those who come receive rain and blessing; those who refuse experience drought.
5. They Share in God’s Joy
Also the foreigners who join themselves to Adonai, to minister to Him, and to love the Name of Adonai, and to be His servants—all who keep from profaning Shabbat and hold fast to My covenant—these I will bring to My holy mountain, and let them rejoice in My House of Prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be acceptable on My altar. For My House will be called a House of Prayer for all nations.” Isaiah 56:6–7
Benefit: Joy, acceptance, and fellowship with Adonai.
6. They Receive Light
“Arise, shine, for your light has come! The glory of Adonai has risen on you. For, behold, darkness covers the earth and deep darkness the peoples. But Adonai will arise upon you, and His glory will appear over you. Nations will come to your light, kings to the brilliance of your rising. Isaiah 60:1–3
Benefit: Spiritual illumination and revelation.
7. They Receive Blessing Through Israel
“I will bow down My knee to bless, favor, do good, and exalt those who bow down their knee to bless, favor, do good, and exalt You. And I will decree a curse of misfortune and total destruction to those who dishonor and disrespect you by taking you lightly.” Genesis 12:3 STB
Benefit: The nations partake of the covenant blessings flowing through Abraham and Israel.
8. They Become Citizens in the Kingdom of God
“But at the end of days the mountain of Adonai’s House will be established as chief of the mountains and will be raised above the hills. Peoples will flow up to it. Then many nations will go and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of Adonai, to the House of the God of Jacob! Then He will direct us in His ways, and we will walk in His paths.” For Torah will go forth from Zion and the word of Adonai from Jerusalem. Micah 4:1–2
Benefit: They become participants in Messiah’s righteous government.
9. They Receive the Presence of the King
“Indeed, many peoples and powerful nations will come to seek Adonai-Tzva’ot in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of Adonai.” Thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot, “In those days it will come to pass that ten men from every language of the nations will grasp the corner of the garment of a Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’” Zechariah 8:22–23
Benefit: Direct access to the presence and favor of the King.
10. They Receive Restoration and Life
“It is like the dew of Hermon, coming down upon the mountains of Zion. For there Adonai commanded the blessing—life forevermore!” Psalm 133:3
While speaking of unity among God’s people in Zion, the principle remains that God’s commanded blessing flows from His dwelling place.
Summary of the Benefits of Coming Up to Zion
- Torah and divine instruction
- Peace and security
- Healing
- Rain and prosperity
- Joy in God’s presence
- Spiritual light and revelation
- Covenant blessing
- Participation in Messiah’s Kingdom
- Favor before Adonai
- Life and restoration
A powerful summary verse is found in the book of Isaiah:
“Your gates will be open continually. They will not be shut day or night, so that men may bring to you the wealth of the nations, with their kings led in procession. Isaiah 60:11
In the Messianic Age, the nations do not lose by coming to Zion—they gain instruction, peace, healing, blessing, and fellowship with the God of Israel and His Messiah.
